Power Steering gremlin

So I purchased my FC in July, it's power steering was always very heavy and basically not existent.

After my fan belt broke, the seals baked, and it lost 1 gallon of coolent-- it was rebuilt and ported. Once I had it up and running again, I noticed something... my powersteering was much lighter now, it actually whined and acted like-- POWER STEERING.

In all my excitement I remembered that my rack had a leak, maybe now that stop leak stuff will work! I ran out (in the FC to get the miles to break it in) bought some and poured it in. Full crank left, full crank right... off to break it in more.

Within a few miles I noticed the power steering was back to what it had always been.

After talking with a buddy of mine he reminded me that many imports don't take just plain old PS fluid. I searched the forums and to my dismay I saw it was recommended that ATF type F or Dexcon II be used in the PS system...

My question is this, could the fuild cause this problem? It is like a fuse blew or something, it's THAT noticable. I know the previous owner was using plain old PS fluid as the car came with a partial bottle (always a good sign). So, I guess it's possible I should replace the pump and consider a rebuild then also?

Any and all help appreciated.
