Planning some major work on car, but dont know where to purchace some parts
 

I am planning to do a fairly big work on my car. The place where I work has a car lift and it will be open for a few weeks, and my boss said I could use it for a bit to work on my RX7.

Here is what I am planning: replace 5th gear synchro, replace clutch, replace broken fuel door pin.

When looking at the tutorial for 5th gear synchro, I noticed that it says that you should get a new "shift select spindle". I can not find one of those anywhere.

The other part I can not find a source for is the pin mechanism that holds the fuel door shut. I am fairly sure some ahole pryed my gas tank door open and it broke. It is currently held shut by magnets and tape.

I am planning on purchacing the 5th gear synchro with one from Atkins Rotary. Is that a reputable source for RX7 parts?

Where could I source the shift select spindle and the fuel door latch mechanism? Is there any other maintance work that should be done while I am in the area?

Atkins is a good source for parts. i've never had a major problem with them and the minor problem i had may have just come down to my not researching enough, so i never mentioned it to them.

there was no particular order in my list, but you should be able to get just about anything you need between any of those sources. you might try Malloy first though. Ray has a presence here and from what i heard, he tries to take care of you.

Sorry, a little late to the thread. A couple of comments....
*If you haven't already, go to the 3rd Gen FAQ stickys and watch the video on "the pull-type clutch". It's really not complicated but will throw you if you've never dealt with it before.
*Personally I'd just go through Ray @ Malloy Mazda for the synchro and shift select spindle. He's a FD owner himself and will know what you need. Probably better price than Adkins as well.
*Ask him about the fuel door latch assembly. If anyone will be able to find it, he will.
*While you're on the phone with Ray and since the clutch is being replace and your car is at 70K miles, I'd strongly consider replacing these things:
*Pilot bearing and seal
*Clutch release (throw-out) bearing
*Clutch fork (especially if you're replacing the pressure plate with a stiffer/upgraded aftermarket version.
*Rear transmission seal.

Some other things to consider:
*Shifter bushing kit
*Re-surface flywheel
*If flywheel is removed for resurface, replace rear main seal and re-torque engine tension bolts.

Are you having issues with your 5th gear? It's a chore to replace the syncros, if that's all you're doing. You may want to try a synthetic gear oil first.

Now, if you are replacing your clutch - and are having syncro issues - go for it. It's not that hard once you have the transmission out. I'd also suggest replacing the bearings that are removed (believe it's the rear mainshaft and countershaft bearings). You need to pull them out and that puts pressure on the bearings. They are not that expensive and it's another "while you're at it". David Geesaman did a good writeup on a full transmission rebuild ("FD Transmission Rebuild") that includes what you need to do for replacing the 5th gear syncro.


 

If it's a cracked 5th gear synchro...and personal experience tells me it probably is on a '93, changing gear oil won't help. It's not a walk in the park, but 5th synchro is the easiest and least invasive to change. I think the biggest challenge is usually finding (or making) the needed long-armed puller.
