Oil smoke

My FD smokes for a few seconds when you first start it inthe morning. It doesn't smoke continuously, only for the few few minutes it's running. Any idea what I should be thinking of first?

Your family and close friends. ;)

Depending on mileage, I think oil control rings could be worn a bit. But if you pre-mix...or even if you don't, some oil might be left in the combustion chamber on shut down and burns off on cold start.
I've seen a totally original FD with only 20K miles do the same thing. On the few occasions I've had to stand behind my car when someone else starts it, I've seen it. So my feeling is that it's pretty common. I pre-mix and have a working OMP. Regardless, as long as it stops quickly and only on cold start, I personally don't worry about it much.

oil smoke

Thanks sgtblue. What do you mean when you ask if i pre-mix? I'm assuming you are mixing something with your fuel?

premixing is adding 2 stroke oil to your fuel.
If you get rid of the oil metering system then the engine's apex seals still need to be lubricated internally to run.
The Premix does that in place of the oil metering system.

The ratio varies but the "usual" safe dosage is 1 ounce to one gallon of fuel.
Now if you have a OMP still hooked up and want the extra protection then you can cut it down to 1/2 oz per gallon of fuel.(like 8 oz per tank).

Too much premix though can cause smoking and a real bad exhaust smell!(it's funky with premix anyways)..also the risk of plug fouling.

That makes sense. So with the stock oil metering still functioning premixing isn't necessary?

Negatory, just keep your eye on your oil level every fill up

It's not mandatory.

A 20years rotary engine builder, told me that even with the RA adapter to keep premixing

I agree....

But to discuss exactly why I believe it's beneficial I'd want approval from a mod since we'll continue to get off-topic. Still, it's not mandatory and there are many FD owners on here representing many hundreds of thousands of miles with no issues running only the stock OMP.
