Noise in rearend.

I have a s2 gsl and its been having a squealing/squeaking noise come from the rearend whenever my car is compression breaking. It doesn't do it when it is accelerating or when I'm on the breaks, just when it is in gear and rolling at low rpms, like going down hill. And the lower the gear the more noise it makes. I think it has something to do with the diff which is supposed to be limited slip but I haven't actually checked it out yet. Anyone know what it could be and how to fix it?

al time to drain the fluid and look for metal in the oil.

What if there is metal in the oil?

Find a replacement rear end, or take on the task of rebuilding it yourself

If there isn't, probably just looking at a bad wheel bearing

Either way that sounds like it sucks. I was hoping it was just low but that sucks.

Is it a howling sound or a grinding sound? And does it do it worse when turning one way versus the other?

I'm not totally sure what you mean by howling but it is definitely not a grinding sound. It's a squeal. I don't know how else to really explain it. Almost like bad brakes. Its not affected by turning either way.

if noise gets louder as the car goes faster then its a wheel bearing. it would sound more like humming or howling. if its squealing, check your brake pads. the pad sensor should be on the inner pad so no use looking at the outer pad. gonna have to remove the wheels and check inner pads.

btw ive never heard a rear diff squeal before. usually just clunking from missing teeth on gears or clunking from broken diff mounts. even if your lsd isnt working, you still should be able to spin 1 tire and would still drive fine. just harder to do donuts. remember check the basics first

Cool. It does slow it down when it squeals but it's intermittent. Like Morse code. Could be brake related. Also that's good advice thanks.
