No Torque?
 

Hey guys,

I have a 1990 turbo rx7, everything stock.

So today i let my co worker test out my car. he said that the car seems to not have much torque. Compare to his mazda 6 mazdaspeed his had more torque? So i was wondering if there is a difference in torque when it comes to rotary engines and piston?

Rotary engines are perceived to make less torque then piston engines. In reality, their torque output is pretty good but occurs higher in the rev range. For example, planting the pedal at 1500 RPM isn't going to be very fun. Comparing to a V6 isn't fair.

I'm assuming the car is working properly as well. If it is down on boost or compression, it will feel sluggish.

Later on, you can bump the boost a few PSI and then your friend will have a different attitude.

GO to about 5000+ rpms and test

you dont need torque you got rpm

peak tq on rotaries are in the mid range, and its pretty much pulls all the way to redline, unlike a piston engine where the power drops off.

the MS6 has a turboed 2.3, not a v6 btw.

the rx7 has tq, just comes in at a different part of the powerband.

I have a mazdaspeed 3 (same engine as the ms6) The thing with that engine is that it has gobs of torque really low in the power band. Peak torque is around 3k rpm.

BUT power dies completely after 5.5k rpm in stock form.

Ah, turbo 4. The car has one of those piston things I don't deal with...

But it is very common nowadays for manufactures to use very small turbos for a large amount of punch down low, then they run out of flow quickly as the RPM increases. The TII has a turbo that is probably twice as large as what is in the piston car and is set up to provide a fairly linear (as much as it can be having been designed in the '80s) response. It doesn't start tapering off until 6.5K or so.
