no take off power and high rpm.

I have a 88 N/A that has been sitting for over 7 years. I have flushed the gas lines cleaned that tank and colling system and changed the oil and both fuel filters.

When im just sit at idle it idles between 1300 and 1700 rpms and what i go to drive it it has a slow take off until 3rd gear. I have already tried just driving in 1st to about 4500 rpm and shifting and when i go in to second it still has no pick up.
If any one can point me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it.

Did you do the In tank filter yet?
and get your injectors cleaned?

wthdidusay82 10-19-12 09:07 PM

Check your timing and get your injectors cleaned, replace spark plugs

duggiesrx7 10-19-12 10:53 PM

entire fuel system and tank has been cleaned. the inline filter and strainer are new. I also talked to a guy at napa that works on alot of rotaries and they were stumped. I did pull the primary injector and they screens looked clean i also flushed all of the fuel lines.

As for the timing i haven't checked it but i am nervous to mess with it because i haven't done it before and do not want to mess anything up. So i have to find some one that knows how to check it for me and teach me how to do that.

satch 10-19-12 11:26 PM

You throttle cable might be too tight causing the higher than normal idle. A fast idle cam that is out of wack would also cause a higher than normal idle.

duggiesrx7 10-19-12 11:34 PM

I did not think about the throttle cable thanks satch ill check the first thing in the morning. The cop next door may not like me cranking the car and just letting it sit and idle right now lol

satch 10-19-12 11:43 PM

And injectors that have not been used for years would make one think that it is a potential problem. A clogged cat, maladjusted TPS, troubled Pressure Sensor, aging fuel pump and its associated wiring, Cruise control cable and incorrect timing could all contribute to your problem. Using the "advanced search" feature will provide you w/how to check all of these possibilities.

duggiesrx7 10-19-12 11:55 PM

Thanks i can rule out the cruise control because my car doesn't have it. now i know where to start thanks alot. I'll let yall know the turn out.

wthdidusay82 10-20-12 02:22 PM

Setting the timing to stock is pretty easy.

duggiesrx7 10-20-12 06:14 PM

i had nash....a guy i met here come over and take a look he also pointed out that the...i for got what its called i know its on the left bottom side of the motor i think it was the secondary ports if i remember correctly are stuck.

I had a bad day ran over my phone and what not but i did get the exhaust off the car with the little time i had. tomm morning since the car is at my shop now i can run my new piping so the cat problem will be eliminated. and ill take it for a test drive and see how it goes.

wthdidusay82 10-21-12 07:20 AM

Secondary ports (5th and 6th), they open at around 4,000 rpm and if closed will limit your power severely

You'll need to get them unstuck somehow.

duggiesrx7 10-21-12 07:39 AM

after i put the exhaust back together today im going to try and get them open.

wthdidusay82 10-21-12 09:33 AM

Actually they're auxiliary ports. Primary and secondary are always on.

5/6 ports are basically an na rx7s vtec.

If you can't get them to function (open;close), you can wire them open , but you'll suffer low -mid rpm power/torque loss, just not the high rpm power loss.

I personally had my 5/6 port actuators, rods, and sleeves removed and capped off.

duggiesrx7 10-21-12 11:22 AM

well right now i have no low end power at all it doesnt start realy moving till i hit 2nd gear.

wthdidusay82 10-21-12 01:22 PM

Probably clogged injectors and/or timing is way off.(probably retarded)

duggiesrx7 10-21-12 10:14 PM

I buying a timing and Nash is gonna help me set and adjust it

duggiesrx7 11-10-12 10:29 AM

Update. I finally found some more free time to mess with this thing. I had a certified mechanic come by and take a look. he was able to get my rpms down to 700. he took a screw driver and pryed up on the throttle linkage on the front side of the TB. there is some play in it and the lower butterfly in the TB is patrially open and when you close it idles normal. also the there is a rod that comes down from the front of the TB to another linkage that seems to also have alot of play in it.

wthdidusay82 11-10-12 02:22 PM

You should a just taken it off checked it out and cleaned it. Lol

You can take the throttle body off pretty easily.

yea im doing that now i do know my thermowax is functioning i poured hot water in it and watch its move and then cooled it and watched it move again

coldpie 11-13-12 01:00 AM

so with the fastidle cam being out of wack does it need to be replaced? mine is bottomed out and still idles between 1500-2000

duggiesrx7 11-23-12 08:43 PM

Update:

Ok so i finally get the intake manifold and TB back together and hooked it all up. I swapped my primary injectors with my secondaries because my secondaries have new gromets and or rings and would rather the secondaries leak than the primaries so i can atlease see it. Now the car cranks then dies instantly. I've went over every thing and im starting to think on of the injectors are bad causing me not to get any power before i swapped them. Im pulling them all out and bringing them to my cousin to see if they are good and to clean them he owns a shop about an hour from me?

misterstyx69 11-23-12 08:46 PM

make sure the Afm is hooked up(connector on afm) ..If not it will start up and die..over and over.
start,rev up,cough,gag,..nada...

duggiesrx7 11-23-12 09:40 PM

Thanks. I never unplugged that but i went and double checked it and its all hooked up. I'm going to get a fuel pressure gauge tomorrow after work also to make sure im getting proper flow because i did notice when i tool the secondary fuel rail off the second time no fuel can out of the other side of the rail.

Also when i first start it it will shoot up to about 2500 and try to stay on with my foot on the gas pedal but it dies and way and after that i crank for a second or to then die.

duggiesrx7 11-29-12 03:29 PM

Ok. This is the last up date ill be starting a build thread soon. I decided to pull a compression test with a gauge instead of by ear and it pulled 60 psi on 3 rotation on the front rotor and after that i decided not to even check the back it just gives me more incentive to pull and search for a Tii which may have to wait till after the holidays because i have gotten so busy with work and having to buy for christmas. I should be pulling the motor this weekend and pulling it apart to see whats still good on it and sell off the parts to fund the project. Good thing this is my project car so i can take as long as i need and research and much as i want. Im still trying to determine my goal before i start buying everything. I know I'm going with a complete Tii swap from engine to drive train and 5 lug and brake conversion. I'm also trying to decide what kinda of port to go with leaning towards a mild street port. Ill discuss it more when i start to get the build under way. Thank your guys for your help it was greatly appreciated.

wthdidusay82 11-29-12 05:07 PM

Honestly a streetport isn't completely necessary, you can make plenty of power on the stock ports.

Street porting will give you a boost in mid-high end power, but for normal driving you'll actually be losing power in the low end.

What's your goal for power? Mine is to eventually get 225-250 whp on the stock turbo, to get anymore power than that you'll need to upgrade your turbo to at least a stage 1 bnr, that's good for 300-320whp.

Obviously no matter what you'll need all the correct corressponding mods depending on the amount of boost/power you'll be running.
