no spark
 

just got this 88 convertible, been sitting in a field for a long time,,I got it running last weekend and put on a new clutch master cylinder and got the clutch back, so I started it up and pulled it out of the garage and sprayed the engine bay with degreaser and washed it off,,,,started it back up and pulled it in the shop, changed the oil and filter, thermostat and anitfreeze, took the battery and battey tray out to clean leaves and debri out and also removed the air filter box for the same reason and now it has no spark,,,what did i screw up, any help would be appreciated,,I am new to these cars.

Is the AFM plugged in?
did you make sure all electrical connections were DRY after degreasing?Any water that gets into connections seems to cause real Problems with the FC.
What wires did you "clean up",and would you have happened to Not hook them back up as required Darryl?

You'll want to pull the two wire plug off of the leading coil and w/key to on check for 12 volts on the Black/Yellow wire. If you find no voltage then check to see if the Black/White wire in the Green check connector plug near the leading coil has 12 volts as well w/key to on. If it does not then check the 15 amp Engine fuse in the interior fuse box.

what is the afm? and where is it? I am an air cooled man, so I dont know anything much about this car. I did check all the fuses under the dash and under the hood. I will check for voltage black/yellow wire and report back,,,thanks for the help.

ok i have 12 volts on the black/yellow wire on the leading coil,,,that is the one at the front correct?

Should be.

AFM is located under the air box and accepts air from the box and measures it as it sends this air up to the throttle body.

When you removed the air box,there was a big wired connector going to a Thing aattched to the air box( That is the AIR FLOW METER,the AFM) .
If it isn't plugged in the car will start but die.
Also IF the car has sat awhile then the Flapper door inside the AFM can stick,and if it can move it can't "meter air flow" so the car won't start.
I am betting that you didn't hook up the AFM to the Wiring harness after you took the air box out for cleaning.
I am known to be a bad guesser though too!

got the car back from the shop today....the afm was bad....towing, labor, diagnostic time, part= $412.00

the car is very hard to start first thing in the morning,,,,when it does start it produces a LOT of white smoke,,,,gas I would assume,,,,jacked it up today to change fuel filter and gas was dripping out of the exhaust....help!!!!!

next step is pulling your fuel injectors and sending them off to get cleaned.
The car has sat for long time.It's not going to just start up and run normally.It needs maintenance.
