Newb Questions

I have a '93 and was wondering how the upgraded Gilmer Drive pulleys work and if anyone would recommend them?

Also, what are the parameters of the A'pexi Power FC unit. What are its limits and capabilities? I know it is a stand alone ECU, but is it basically for A/F ratios only?

What is needed to maximize the high revving abilities of the rotary? Upgrade all aspects of fuel delivery - are there certain brands I should steer clear of? Are there lightened rotors or is the block able to be balanced? Street port or Bridge port needed? What else?

Lastly, what kind of reasonable WHP am I able to squeeze out of the stock twins? Ideally I would like around 450 whp and am trying to figure out if I should max out the twins or stop beating around the bush and just go for a single...

Thanks guys

Anyone?

Ok where should I start

glimmer drive I dont think there is any benefit to it .

THe power FC can do A LOT more then just adjust air fuel ratios , it can do everything from boost controlling , to datalogging , to timing , to fan temp adjustments , to idle controlling ,to rev limit setting , Then its best feature is the commander being able to give you a more accurate reading of all your car's sensors form AIT , to Voltage , to boost . it is a very good ECU it has its faults but its good base .

450 on the twins is asking alot .. tomuch 300 whp is normally what you get out of the twins safely a bit more a bit less depending on alot of things .

as for maximizing hte potential of high reving engine like the rotary .. its more about balance .. at very high rpms the rotors start ot wobble , so balanced components , with some good seals , and porting . And you're good

Ofcourse more fuel is needed , but thats a whole nother discussion .

Are you daily driving? If so I'd keep it at 300 HP max. You don't need a ton of power to daily. You'll end up damaging things much faster the more power you have if you daily it.

There won't be much of a benefit setting up a Gilmer drive in an fd, to do so requires a lot of extra work for minimal gain especially for cars that are not being setup strictly for high rpm racing.

As stated the common consensus is the twins are good to 300 whp, any more and they'll usually just superheat the air and blow your engine, if you want to keep the twins I think Rich made low 400 with a set of bnr twins but at that level a singl is most reliable.

If you're planning to increase power like that a pfc will do the job well, it's tried and true to make any engine adjustments necessary and while it is the favorite there are plenty of other options out there. Everything else you have asked about it depends how and where you plan to drive the car, a daily driver shouldn't need more than 350whp unless you want bragging rights because thing get broken very easily above that limit and tend to get exponentially more expensive to fix.

He this is some food for thought

For a streeted car, a decent street port is appropriate, but I'm not sure how it affects emissions if you have that to worry about.
If the rotors are letter matched, balancing isn't needed unless the engine is going to be living at high rpms....as in a race/track engine. If that's the case I think bearing clearances are usually loosened and there are oil mods to do as well.
If I can give a new owner advice....don't worry about hp goals just yet. Search thru the stickys for reliabilitycooling mods first. Sort the car out with new fluids and any needed maintenance while you search and read up in the 3rd Gen. Section with these kinds of questions.

Oh, that Gilmer drive belt is just silly. Put one on for a streeted car and most guys will be snickering at you behind your back.

Thanks for the responses thus far.

The car will not be daily driven. I have tried that before and for me, it isn't the best option. It will be seeing some track use but I really dont see a trailer in its future.

I'm not exactly new to the car, I've owned it for awhile, blew the motor and it has been sitting in my garage for quite some time now. But I have renewed interest and the money to back it up, now. I'am currently stripping it down and prepping for paint (including the engine bay). The motor and tranny are very close to coming out. I'am trying to refresh mentally on everything rotary since I didn't really keep up over the years, which is why I am asking these questions.

I now am the owner of a PFC but wasn't sure if I would still be needing the AVC-R I am about to buy? Since the PFC can also control boost...

If I would be pushing BnR twins to the limits at 400whp or so, I think it would be best that I just go with a single. I am also in the process of deciding if an aggressive street port or a bridge port would be sufficient for my goals. Was also looking to port both upper and lower intake manis. The car also has a MS short shifter, 3in full exhaust, about to do a complete overhaul on the braking system and looking into V-mount and coilover set ups (if anyone has recommendations). And I'am looking to fully customize full delivery to prevent another blown motor.

Lastly, emissions do not plague my state. I live in N.KY close to Cinci.

Any additional responses are welcomed
