New RX7-low power

I am the proud owner of a brand new to me 1989 RX7 NA, and it seems to not be making the full power it should (0-60 in maybe 11-13 seconds. we are about a mile high too though). I have talked to a good trustworthy mechanic, and he says that the coolant temp sensor is broken, causing the car to constantly run rich. (even more than normal) so I just wanted to ask if this is possibly the reason for the lack of power (could probably do with a tune up too). only upgrades are cat delete and kandn filter, the cat needs to be put back on for emissions though. Thank you for your help! :)

welcome to the board. :)

your mechanic is correct in that it is a POSSIBILITY, but it will require confirmation, then repair and testing.

the car is new to you. if you are truly getting 12 second 0-60 times, then something is clearly wrong - even given age and normal wear. i would suggest looking into ALL possibilities as it truly could be anything (hurt engine, brakes, screwed injectors, etc.).

Ok! Thank you for your help! He has tested it and the coolant temp sensor is definitely screwed. I hope thats all it is though. Thank you for your time to answer this! :)

Due to the altitude in your area, your engine will have about 85% relative horsepower. However, the car should still do 0-60 in about 9 seconds. Once you get the coolant temp sensor fixed then you can troubleshoot for other problems.

After the coolant sensor do the usual compression test "cheap" and you can cancel the biggest issue

Thank You all! :)

I feel my car is having the same issue. It feels slow and its running rich. Its my 1st rx7 so i was assuming that was just the way it runs

@aeenox: Ya, same here, but I watched a video of a very lighty modded rx-7 accelerating, and It was miles faster than my own. On a side note, the GSL-SE was the first RX with fuel injection, right? :D

Compression and leak down test for sure.. Any smoke or signs of wear? How many miles are on the. Drivetrain?

mmmmmRevs 11-23-13 06:45 PM

No smoke, no signs of wear and either 70,000 or 140,000. it may or may not have had an engine swap.

satch 11-23-13 07:04 PM

Clogged injectors, misadjusted TPS, clogged catalytic converter, sub-standard fuel pressure, poor grounding.........

rxmiles 11-25-13 12:09 AM

look at the secondary ports....let's just say you're using my old leading coil pack.

mmmmmRevs 11-25-13 04:15 AM

Alright I got an update, I got a comp test, 90 and 95, (good) could be all those things, but I will wait till the transmission is back in to do anything. See if the problem persists. Thank you all! :D
