Hi all, i'm very new to rotaries and was lucky enough to buy my first FD3S last week. Its a 1993 in Mazda red. The car had sat outside (under tarp) for 10 years and the owner told me prior to sitting it had a complete engine open job inc apex seals etc - but since then hasn't started. I'm a sceptical kinda guy so i've been digging into the car, exhaust ports etc, and so far i'm seeing a lot of evidence that something has been done - there are shiny bolts in hard to reach places for example. I got it very cheaply so i'm not expecting much but it would be amazing to be out in it in a few weeks!

My question is.. do I do a few minor bits (injectors refresh/replace, fuel lines check/clean/replace, oil change, coolant change, oil line check, fuel tank check and clean, all filters) then fire her up or would you suggest an engine out and open up inspection?

When sat, the engine has had oil (so hopefully hasn't rusted) but I have seen evidence of coolant in the rubber hosing rusting.. so I wonder if there is some rust in the jackets too. The engine turns over by hand from the front so I know its not seized.

Thoughts welcome

Welcome to the board. :)

So you're saying that it had a rebuild ten years ago, but was never started? Did you get sound from all six chambers when you turned it by hand?

Anyway, do you have any information on who built the engine? I would start there, and depending on what you find, I would say just compression test it, and move on to the items you mentioned if the compression is good. I don't know what climate you live in, but you may also want to add vacuum lines to your list.

Hey
Welcome !
I don't really have advices for a 'big' project like this, but I'm pretty interested to see what happens next !
I hope you'll post some photos and advancement on the forum

What modifications? You’ve dug pretty deeply if you’ve gotten to exaust ports. I would’ve recommended changing coolant and draining the old gas (NADM’s should have a drain plug) and trying to start it. If it runs great. Run some GOOD fuel system cleaner through it and take care of the maintenance...including fuel filter. Leave the injectors alone. If it doesn’t, go through standard diagnostics...compression,fuel spark just like anything else. Engine disassembly before that makes little sense.
