Need some opinions on an RX7

Alright guys, first off sorry if this is in the wrong place. I've been tempted to put this is several places already, but since this is "flame free" I decided to try here.

^that's the ad, I'm going to call him later on today and see what's up besides the fact that it doesn't run. Maybe if you guys can give me some opinions or some questions to ask it would really be helpful!

Could be a good project. The quarter panel damage will probably be more than $150 to fix, if you're interested in actually having it painted . Something to keep in mind. Have the owner do a compression test for you before buying it. If it's got a starter in it, all it'll take is a battery and cables to crank it. You can find some info on finishing the swap in my signature & in the FAQ.

I would eventually get it painted, I'd rather have it running first to be on the safe side. I talked to him earlier this afternoon and he said all it would need to run is to hooked it up (I'm guessing the battery). I'm going to get in touch with him tomorrow and see exactly what "hooked up" means and see if he can do a compression test.

What should I look for if he can perform the compression test?

3 even pulses per rotor at about ~30+psi each. Or 90+ psi combined per rotor. If it's higher, that's even better.

Hey told me that he would do a compression test and get back to me, when he tells me what it gave I'll post here for your opinion.

If I were you, I'd ask to see the compression test results in person. Otherwise, you're just trusting the guy.

That's too much $$ for that car. If you check on Craigslist & are willing to travel there's a rx-7 in the Lehigh Valley area for $600 OBO.The car runs but they listed it in the parts section instead of vehicles. I already checked it out but I'm not into 2nd gen. The guy just wants to get rid of it. All it needs is a good paint job.

200+ miles to travel out to Lehigh Valley isn't something I'm willing to do. He actually wants 1200$ for it, and it comes with an extra motor (NA) and extra tranny, and some extra parts like turbo air intake, new clutch, etc.

I don't think it's that bad of a deal considering the turbo motor isn't screwed up in any way.

The way the car looks in the pic I wouldn't even pay $500 for it. As far as the motor goes, if I don't see the motor running and test the compression I wouldn't pay any more than $100. Especially for a turbo motor which tend to break the apex seals before any other motors.

I do not know much about these cars, and I was really looking for a nice project but it seems I'm going to have to do a lot more research before I buy anything.... Looks liked it's back to looking for now.

Thanks for the opinions guys!

If you can find one in decent shape for $1200 or a real good deal for a parts car that hasn't been touched, jump on it. You would have a nice project by parting one out to fix the other one.The deals are out there you just have to be patient and keep looking.

Well I was just snooping around and I saw this, probably overlooked it.

This was at the bottom of the list, this one looks to be in a little better shape, but is he asking to much?

If not I'll just wait and see if a better one pops up for less and wait for a parts car to follow.

IMO, i think the second one is way better because at least its together, but seeing as its been s4-s5 manifold swapped you never know what other measures the previous owner took just to make it sellable.

if you really want an rx7, find the most stock and cherry running one, that way youre not building your house on sand you know what i meen?

but thats just my opinion. good luck w/ the car hunt!

Rextasee 07-09-09 12:51 AM

oh yeah and i meant to say the one with the lowest milage!!! shouldnt smell like gas when driven or pulsation damper could be going, which could be catastophic.... and if what just happened to me happened to you, you wouldnt be happy.

i just picked up an 88 gxl and the pulsation damper is going... gas is leaking on to the motor and it could ignite anytime i drive it but right now i dont have enough for a new one or the banjo bolt mod (which i wouldnt do anyway) and its my DD.... sucks
but yeah good luck@ i love rotaries!
