need help

hi guys...i just bought 86 rx7 n a and i found something at the engine that i don't know what it is. Is an adjustment button located near the air filter box twards the strut. it has a L and R on it and an arrow from L to R. Can anyone tell me what that thing does?? Thanks you.

It is the idle mixture adjustment. Don't touch it.

You can find this information in the factory service manual (download it from the FAQ) or the Haynes manual (get one from the local auto parts store).

how much did you turn it and to which direction? how does the car currently idle?

first i turned all the way to the left.. drove like that for a while, all the way to the right and drove like that.. and now is in the middle..
If is too much to rhe right the car was "shaking" and i turned twards the left untill it rean smooth..i don't kno how to explain in a different way.
How can i determine if is a correct position?
Thanks again

Why would you touch it if you don't know what it does?

You can get it back to approximately the correct position by adjusting it rich until the engine stumbles, then leaning it out until it starts to hunt a little, then richening it up slightly until it runs smoothly. Make sure the car is fully warm before you do this and off of the cold start high idle.
