My 7 is burning rich (cat is glowing)

I have an 86 RX-7 N/A and it's burning very rich. I have replaced the fuel dampener, fuel injecters and also the trailing coil. The coil was miss firing. It is still running rich and the cat is glowing after only 5 minutes of the car running. The cat and mufflers are new also. Any Ideas?

Well, a full tuneup is a good place to start. Plugs, wires, filters, etc.

Test the operation of the ECT as per the instructions in the FSM.

Test the AFM as well.

You can pull the plugs and determine the condition of the engine. They should be a tanish with maybe some black deposits. If they are black and sooty, the engine is rich. If only one plug is black and full of soot, then that rotor is the issue. Black and oily would indicate an oil o-ring failure.

Make sure you still have spark on the lower spark plugs too. Highly retarded timing, or loss of leading ignition, will cause this...

I did the full tune up also and it didn't help, new plugs, K&N air filter, wires.

I will test the ECT and the AFM.

Thanks for the info, I will let you know how it goes and ask if there is any thing else I need to look at.

Yes, check for leading spark as suggested above. I forgot to mention this.

I checked the leading coil and its ok, also the ECT is ok, How do I check the MAF sensor?

black1991 05-09-09 12:59 AM

which cat is glowing the pre or main and is the replacement oem or aftermarket

Aaron Cake 05-09-09 10:14 AM

The FSM has procedures to check the AFM.

RX7JIM86 05-09-09 12:29 PM

It's the main cat that is glowing, I'm not sure if it's OEM or not, what ever the muffler shop put on it.

Thanks for all the info, my 7 is now running smooth. It's great to know that anyone with an rx7 can get help with anything RX7. Thanks again. Now it's time to do the body work and paint job. :icon_tup:

How did you fix this (if ya dont mind me asking) =P And congrats!

NoPistons! 05-17-09 01:33 AM

Glowing cat?

I'd fix that by promplty replacing it with a test pipe and selling the cat to some hustler.

black1991 05-18-09 11:07 PM

btw if the 2 cats are stock and full their worth $110 right now
