motor wont turn over

there gas getting into the carb but the motor wont fire only clicks. the car has been sitting for a least 3 years

After sitting for 3 years, the entire fuel system will be trashed. It needs to be cleaned, flushed, filters replaced, carb rebuilt, etc.

Now when you say "only clicks", are you referring to the starter? Can you turn the engine over by hand?

1979 rx7 fan 07-03-12 09:28 AM

i think is the starter or one of the ignition relays. and how do you turn it over by hand.

1979 rx7 fan 07-03-12 11:43 AM

sounds like the clicking is coming from the ignition coils on the left fender

Grab the front pulley, and see if you can turn it. This will tell you if the motor is locked up. If the motor rotates without issue, then start checking the wiring between the battery and the starter, cleaning all connections and tightening as needed. Battery cables might have to be replaced due to internal corrosion.

If you can get the starter to turn the motor over, then we can deal with the other issues that you are sure to find. :)

Also, if you own or can borrow a battery charger, make sure that the battery is FULLY charged. Trying to use jumper cables usually won't do the trick if the battery is low.

Good luck...

Should of said this earlier we had the motor running using a funnel going in to carb started no problem. But now that I got the gas from the tank going to the motor there just that clicking

check the starter auxiliary wire, it should show ~12v with the key set to start, if not then you will have to backtrace the start circuit from the starter to the faulty relay or ignition switch.

jumper a screwdriver from the start connector to the battery post on the starter, this will verify that the starter and it's wiring is ok still.

Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding, but did you say the vehicle starts up fine when you supply fuel via a funnel? If so, would this not rule out any starter related issue as the culperate? I would be inclined to say that the suggestion above to clean out the fuel system is the appropriate course of action to take.

RotaryEvolution 07-04-12 10:09 PM

it probably has 2 issues now according to how i read it. a starter issue causing the click click nothing scenario and most likely a gummed up carburetor.

you can't let a carb sit for more than 2-3 months without running the engine periodically, the fuel will dry out in the bowls and clog the jets. sometimes you get lucky, most of the time you don't.

thanks everyone got the problem fixed it was just the wires going to the starter. she stared with no trouble but stall after a minute or so, I think its just bc i don't know how to use the choke

Robbie_B 07-19-12 09:32 PM

Good to hear its fixed!

Kentetsu 07-19-12 10:24 PM

Glad to hear you got her started. Replace the fuel filter if you haven't yet, you might be running out of fuel (stalling issue)...

The fuel filter was the first thing i did lol. there is gas but its a little old, and what would make it smoke a lot the car has been sitting 6 years or so i thought it would stop after 5 min but i didn't

Just went out the smoking is a lot less but there still a little smoke.

I don't want to over simplify the issue but I would bet a lot of green that your only problem is a dead (DEAD) battery. They're easy enough to take out. Take it to your local Advance Auto. They can run a test on it to tell you if it's shot or just needs recharging. Would love to hear if that's the issue. I'm confident it is.

Epiurus 07-20-12 04:30 PM

Heard you solved the problem. Great!

The battery is fine full charge i think its the alternator
