Mazda 13B Engine Identification

Hello RX7 Club members,

My name is Jason and I am in Santa Cruz, CA. I recently bought a 13B engine at the estate sale of a mechanic that passed away. The engine had all the ports taped up and appears to have been recently rebuilt or at least freshened up. I am hoping to get the engine to the right home but I am ignorant to what I have. I was wondering if anyone can tell me the era of this engine and what it might be worth. I will post some pictures below.

Thanks,

Jason

Here are some more pictures with the tape removed.

Welcome to the board. :)

Well, I'm not touching what it's worth for a few reasons, but mainly because this is not the place for that kind of talk.

What I can tell you is it's a 13B=REW. It's from an automatic FD. The front rotor housing looks like it may be from an FC, but I'm not 100% sure.

Is that a hole in the front cover (over the oil pump)?

SuperNovass 10-30-18 10:48 PM

Thank you for the reply. I did not realize the value question was an issue here. I am sorry about that.

Here are some more pictures of the front cover. From what I can gather from what you said above, this was originally from a 3rd generation RX7 with twin turbos backed by an automatic, is that right?

Thanks again,

Jason

Yes. It's from an automatic Gen 3 Rx-7 - at least, the rear side housing is. The front side and intermediates are also REW, as is the front cover and rear rotor housing - presumably the same engine.

Forget about the front cover comment/question I had above. Apparently I don't pay attention. Your photo was the first time I ever noticed that little funky-shaped protrusion on the front cover even though I've had my REW since 2006.

However, I am still not sure about that front rotor housing - I'm tempted to say it's S4, but I will have to wait until I can get to my garage and confirm. I do feel confident saying that it is NOT an REW housing though.

Thanks again for all the help,

Jason

I was a little distracted, I guess, because the whole point of mentioning the possible S4 housing was to tell you that while the engine will run, the trailing plugs are in different positions. That technically means different timing between front and rear chambers.

Okay, I just went out to the garage and I'm fairly certain that it is, indeed, an S4 rotor housing.

with that much rust on the external parts i'd be worried what the inside looks like, even with the tape

Not that diabolical needs it, but concur on the REW auto engine with an earlier housing. The rear auto iron/plate will probable narrow your market. Additionally, a potential buyer will be heavily speculating on the condition of internal parts and quality of assembly.
Hopefully I’m not violating forum rules by saying this BUT IF IT WERE ME I’d disassemble it and spec out each part against the FSM...housings, side plates, e shaft, front cover, tension bolts ...everything. It’ll requires more work (and research on your part), but should bring more money and a clear conscious.

Thanks again guys. I agree, I will sell it as an unknown core. After taking all the tape off, I did see rust residue in one port. Looking in with a flashlight, the case looks nice and the rotor has surface corrosion on it. Taking it apart and checking it out would be the best option. I may stick with a local sale so the buyer can look it over themselves. It does spin very smoothly.

Good to see another person from SC. Welcome to the club!
You didn't buy that engine from a shop in Scotts Valley, did you?

SuperNovass 11-01-18 11:36 AM

No, I did not buy an engine shop in Scotts Valley. I bought this engine at an estate sale about almost year ago and it has been sitting in my garage.

Thanks,

Jason

Just wondering because I know a shop in SV that had about a dozen old 13bs in the back of the shop sitting on a shelf that looks like the shelf in your pic.
That was a few years ago though.

GLW whatever you decide to do with it.

Thanks Natey,

I plan to sell it but am having a hard time coming up with a price. Can you give me a idea what it may be a fair price for this engine? A private message works if it is against the rules to post it here.

Thanks again,

Jason
