making 13b reliable

Hey guys my name is John (toeless) im new to rotarys. My brother in law and me bought an 89 s5 and we want to make it as realiable as possible. We are taking the omp out and premixing, gonna buy an rtek stage 1 chip so it doesnt go into limp mode. The car has 160xxx km on it and we want to get as much life out of it as possible.

Any suggestions on making it really reliable?

Keep it stock. Why would you remove the mop?

wthdidusay82 11-27-12 07:34 PM

The omp is known to go bad on s5 models, and when it does it can cause engine failure, he's probably replacing it as a fail safe.

For reliability, replace fuel filter, get your fuel injectors flow tested/cleaned, new spark plugs and spark plug wires, do banjo bolt mod on fuel pulsation dampener, make sure you have your under body tray and fan shroud around your clutch fan, possibly replace your stock clutch fan with an electric fan, do an oil change, flush your coolant system or at least replace it with new coolant, new thermostat, new waterpump, new belts, vacuum hoses, fuel hoses etc.

There are lots of things you can do, it mostly depends on how well the car was maintained by the previous owners (if they installed cheap parts and did half ass work).

Mop is fine until computer let's you know. If in doubt premix quarter ounce per gallon on top of mop. Banjo bolt bandaid does not apply to his s5. Replace fuel rail. Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda can sell you one. Keep stock fan. E fan is a downgrade.

Why is the efan a downgrade? I always thought they were more reliable, as far as cfm's they put out I'd think that depends on the fan you installed.

rotary>pistons

toelessjoe 11-27-12 11:41 PM

Alright thanks guys. That helps alot

Most Aftermarket Efans dont flow nearly as well as a stock fans ... Plus you need a little bit of wiring knowledge to get htem working correctly . and still wont flow as well .

And as for the OP , Apart from accessories like the OMP , NA rotaries are quite reliable .

marclong 11-28-12 08:31 PM

Oh no the stock fan puts out plenty. Grasshoppers install an electric fan thinking they get more horsepower since it does not tax the motor. Yet they do not factor the taxation on the alternator. It takes A bit more knowledge to understand that variable. In effect the e-fan consumes the same effective power yet delivers less cooling. Under most circumstances albeit.

toelessjoe 11-28-12 08:52 PM

Ah alright. Thanks for the info. I wasnt planning on swappin out the fan but thats good to know

Also, the oil that is injected by the omp to the apex seals will never be as clean as the fresh premix that burns cleaner with the fuel.

omp and e-fan should stay.. keep it simple when modding and it will take you a long way

RXfiles 02-27-13 04:24 PM

hi guys,

Where is that clutch fan located ? I can't figure out where it is..
Thanks

diabolical1 02-27-13 04:38 PM

^ i'll assume that that's a serious question?

it's the stock fan, sitting behind the radiator.

Driver_WT 02-27-13 09:07 PM

What is the best oil for premix?

Sash91 02-27-13 09:33 PM

Premix if you don't mind paying $7/qt of idemitsu.

Yep it was a serious question, this is the first time i see that fan called as a "clutch fan", that confused me a bit.

Ashless two-cycle.

midnightbluefc 03-01-13 05:49 PM

spark plugs stay on top of your oil consumption. your stock oil cooler lines are garbage upgrade to stainless steel (corksport/ mazdatrix) radiator upgrade, keep the motor cool at all times. other than that your basic maintainance

Fcjunker123 03-03-13 12:49 AM

Basically just replace a lot of old worn out parts with either new eom parts or high quality after market parts

helmetface 03-03-13 03:43 PM

It's a car like any other.

I understand that rotary engines are a world of a difference from piston but an owner's manual will provide you with 99% of what should be done.

b16eg 03-03-13 03:46 PM

keep up with regular maintenance, and dont neglect it, its not some 88 crx that will run forever not caring much about it, like posted above, get a factory service manual and read it

Omp delete

What are the things you need to remove if you want to delete the OMP?

OMP --> block off plate.
Oil metering lines --> trash
Nozzles --> replace with screws ??
Use premix.

Is there something else you can delete INSIDE the front cover?
Am I missing something?
Thank you.

I think electric fans could be a reliability boost. Because it goes hand in hand with upgrading the overworked and underpowered factory alternator. I personally did both on my car and have been very happy. As far as removing the OMP I see this as a reliability downgrade. But it's cool if your down with premixing. Just my .02

toelessjoe 03-04-13 01:08 PM

Well my brother in law has an fd and he premixes to. So were just gonna buy a shit ton of premix together that way its cheaper. But thanks guys

drezjdmrx7 03-04-13 01:21 PM

It's much more reliable than an STi trust me on that one.
