loud engine noise

i have a 1991 rx7 turbo, it makes a knocking noise like a diesel or a banging and it vibrates the car alitte, it only is really apparent when the car is warmed, the car was pretty abused from the previous owner, is this a common problem?, im not too familiar with rotarys but could it have somthing to do with the eccentric shaft or the rotor hubs? when i first got it the transmission amplified the noise to the 5th/rev housing so i was thinking a chipped tooth, so i took the tranny apart and there was nothing wrong, any ideas?

Can you Video your car so we can see what it is doing?
If the car has been worked on before by someone who didn't know what they were doing,God knows what the problem is.A video may help..(you can upload to YouTube and then post the link)

Is the motor shaking a lot? That's an indication of bad motor mounts and or transmission mounts.

ill try to post a video im kinda new to this forum lol, the engine mounts seem fine but i will check again, it only makes this noise when the car is warm, in sounds internal, the reason why i checked the tranny was because when the transmission spins it amplifies the noise

Throw out bearing-- Does the noise go away when you press down the clutch?

FC578332 10-22-12 07:17 PM

when the clutch is in its not as loud, but the transmission just amplifies the noise, its deffinitly in the engine but i didnt know if it was a common noise with rotarys like a rod knock with a piston engine

No way man, rotaries don't have rods or valves. Lol

Maybe you have something loose outside the engine or something stuck inside one of the manifolds.

You may try to have your car check to find out what's wrong with the engine.:icon_tup: By the way, I read from an article that the thorough inspection process is just one of the things that makes Gus Johnson’s used vehicles among the best-looking, most dependable on the market. You can read this article here for more info: Gus Johnson Ford Spokane WA

Rotaries are easy to take apart , best modern engine to work on in my opinion. Look at my profile pic, that was my rebuilt streetported na 87 rx7

granted my knowledge of 2nd gens isnt all that great but based on what you've described, id say the fan clutch, is worn out. my 1st gen started making a noise like that after it got warm i could actually grab the fan while the engine was warm. and you could feel the slack in it back and forth. it vibrated alot and was pretty loud.

not sure if alll 2nd gen even have clutch fans, but just saying my .02 cents this just happened to me recently. and i can feel it in my shifter even after i put new motor mounts and trans mounts.

that or the water pump ive been told can make the same kind of noise and problems. but i could be way off.

If the car is running abnormally hot its definitely the clutch fan or water pump.

Mine was bad and ran up to halfway on the stock gauge easily.
