LED Lighting
 

Hey, so my name is Eric and I just bought a clean 1989 FC3S and want to do a couple things with it. The main thing I want to do, but havnt found an inexpensive way to do it, is to put a few little LED lights under my door frame wired with a switch so it turns on/off with the doors opening. I dont want an underglow kit because its expensive, flashy, and I live in washington state so I need something somewhat water resistant. if anyone has any suggestions that would be awesome.

Also, if you know of awesome RX7 accessory/performance parts sites, feel free to post them. :scratch:

I agree with Mar3 about trying the LED x-mas lights and you can try to tie them into the stock door lights. BTW, once you unlock the rest of the board head on over to the NW RX7 Forum in the Regional forums section and introduce yourself to the rest of the Northwest crew.

Cool, I'll check them out. Im not really used to using forum sites, but I just got my first RX7 and Ive heard from alot of people that RX7 forums are good to be on if you own one, and Im doing alot of work on it myself so I could use people to help me out.

probably wont get good responses on outer lighting here haha ! but I once was a ricer and had a scion tc lowered and light up like a blue neon spacecraft..

SO,

My suggestion is to get a pack of street glow 3 dot led strips and wire them into your door light wiring (link below). Adhesive as hell. They are also discrete enough to not get destroyed when you close the door (talking from experience).

I dunno if this would help, something i did a long time ago on one of my cars when i was a kid. I got two of those strip lights that truckers use pretty cheap and mounted them on the body lip right below the doors and wired them into a switch. I got blue ones if i remember right. They werent extremely bright but got the attention i was looking for.

The only problem with that is that my cars an 89 so it doesnt have alot of lights. I have no lights on my doors, the only light that comes on automatically is my dome light. how much trouble would it be to wire to that? But otherwise, if I can wire it somehow so it turns on when the doors open then those stripes would work perfectly though.

ohhhhhh thats right ! LOL sorry im so used to the 84. well what you could do is put a little bigger amp fuse in for the dome.. then tap into the hot wire for the dome and run it to each side. as far as the ground..you can find a local ground anywhere close. You only really need to tap into the hot wire on the dome for it to work with it.

Thats a good question as im thinking your gonna need 12v to your lights and i dont believe your going to get that to the dome light as its to much for the dome light without blowing the bulb, could be wrong though. Best way would be to check the voltage at your domelight with a voltmeter but im thinking its not going to be 12v. And now that i think about it, your domelight comes on when you open the door because the press button in the door jam releases to open the circuit to the domelight and i dont believe that gets 12v either, where you really need to test for voltage. It might be that in your fuseblock, you should have a fuse for interior lights. Check voltage there with a testlight with door open and closed, you may have better luck wiring it to that. Im sure one of the more electrical experienced guys can be alittle more helpful.

He could always take a fused 12V source from the battery and trip the lights on with a relay wired into the door switch.

How hard would that be Jerry? Could you describe it in a bit more detail?

Is it difficult to change the dash lights in the RX? I wanna get some sweet red lights in mine. Anyone know a good site to get them from or perhaps bulb size?

they make them in practically any size to replace the stock bulbs.

I don't know about your area, but LED strips are sold around here in mall kiosks to the Honda crowd, pretty cheaply. I actually like the idea of LED strip door lights and am doing something similar to the Cosmo I am restoring. But mine will be on the Inside at the inner sill area and underneath the seats. Will be very handy when something is dropped when getting into the car at night. Plus they are cool.

The stock door switch is a grounding switch, so just connect a relay coil to + on one side and to the wire leading to the door switch on the other. Bingo, you now have a relay for switching auxiliary lights on the door switch.
