I don't have an FD, but I do think that weird ground wire coming off the knock sensor wiring is what is called a shielded ground. A shielded ground is simply a length of wire mesh that surrounds a wire which could receive unwanted electrical signals from other interfering components, such as ignition systems (spark plugs firing). The pulsing of a plug wire transmitting high voltage electricity can, in some situations, send a magnetic pulse or signal into the surrounding wiring which could accidentally trip the knock sensor, which would result in unwanted engine management and over/under correcting certain systems.
If this is the case, simply twist up the end of the mesh and ground it to the block somewhere, with a ring electrical end or something of the like. As for the connector, only the main wire should attach directly to the connector. Leave the shielded ground around the wire and make sure it isn't touching the connector lead. Also, if you cant get the shielded ground wire out enough to ground out, don't worry, because it more than likely grounds out somewhere else in the harness.
pictures of your issue would help too if you have them.
