K&N on a Rotary?

Quick question here..

I've got an 88fb with a N/A 12a engine on it. im a die-hard K&N fan/user, however my co-worker mentioned he had problems with the oil filters. He said something that the oil they use to coat the "insides" ended up leaking back into the engine and causing seirous problems.. and seeing as how the oil filter on a 12a sits on top and faces down, i dont wanna run into the same problem...

Can anyone confirm/deny this?

K&Ns require proper maintenance. If you over-oil them, you can get some oil sucked into the engine. I'd think that it would correct itself pretty quickly though. Suck oil into an engine, and it will just burn off. If you under-oil them, the filter won't work correctly, and you'll suck a bunch of dirt into the engine.

^ Oops, RotaryRocket88 thought you were talking about air filters.

Most K&N oil filters have an anti-drainback valve, so they should be OK. Filters that do not have this function may let the oil fall back into the pan, which means it would take longer to pressurize the system during engine start-up, increasing engine wear due to the momentary lack of oil. Here is a diagram:

As far as I know, all of the K&N oil filters for RX-7s have an anti-drainback valve. However, if you want to make sure, just check their website and it will be listed with the other statistics for each filter.

Also, the last FB model was made in 85. If you are unsure of your car's year, look at the very last letter in your car's VIN. Example: JM1FB3312F0853123.
B=81, C=82, D=83, E=84, F=85.

Yes, yes I did. For oil filters, I've always used NAPA Gold, and had no complaints.
