Im having problems and dont know anything about a 85' Gsl-SE Rx-7

Hey I have an Rx7 Gsl-Se series its a 1985 and I have no experience on engines much less wankel engines.
I had gotten this car from my brother and he said it has some problems with it and he wanted me to take care of it while he was over seas.

I have no clue what kind of engine it has
neither does my brother but here is my problem:

The other day I had wanted to take it out for a drive and Im a begginer when shifting. So I started it up and shifted it in to reverse and back up and I have a tight squeeze where it was parked between a line of trees on each side and a deck in the back. Well I was backing up and it quit on me. I started it up again and it fired up but then quit again. So I waited for a bit. Turned everything off and let it sit for a second. Then tried starting it up. Well the engine started smoking so I was like shit what am I going to do. So I called up my grandpa because he is good with engines and he built helicopters and whatnot. I told him that my brothers car wont start so he asked me a few questions and listened to the engine and told me it was the spark plugs that arent firing off and they are sputtering. So I thought it was the engine that was flooded. Well I had taken the spark plugs and cleaned them off and soaked the tips in gasoline then brushed the grime off of it and dried them all with a blow dryer. Well I put them back in and it still didnt start so my grandpa gave me another suggestion saying that it could be the battery so I hooked up jumpers and tried jumping it off. So i did that and nothing. I tried turning it over again and the battery smoked. Im just having alot of trouble and I dont know how to work it or anything. The engine is foreign to me and I just have no clue as what I should do.

Please help me. :(

Check fuel flow to the carb, look at the pressure gauge on the fuel line, should be above 3psi
If it has fuel, then pull the plugs out, clean them again, with the throttle all the way down (Only push down one time because every time you press the throttle is injectors more fuel) Crack it for 10-15sec non-stop.

Install the Plugs, and put about 4 cap fulls of ATF (Automatic Trans Fluid) into each of the Primary carb runners (they are the smaller ones in the carb)

Try to crank it again, when if fires off keep the RPMs up (2000) for a min or two to make sure the fuel is cleaned out.
