Ignition Switch for 1980 RX-7

The ignition key switch on my girlfriend's RX-7 is getting really sticky. If you jiggle the steering wheel, the key can usually then be turned, but it's getting worse.

Is there any fix for this?

Failing that, does anyone know of a source for a replacement switch?

Thanks!

could be the cylinder, the key itself, or both. try a spare key or maybe have one cut - it'll cost little to nothing.

if that doesn't work, then it'll be your choice of either getting cylinder (barrel or whatever it's called) redone by a locksmith OR you can just buy a new one. you could also try a junkyard. sometimes the cars are driven there and they just leave the key in it).

for new ones you can try Mazda, auto parts stores or Black Dragon. i have no idea what they cost.

on a sidenote ... i think it's cool that your girlfriend owns an SA. :)

Series 1 ('79-'80) have a shorter key than the '81+ (Series 2-3).

Exact replacement keys are not available nor are aftermarket blanks (except for 1 source in Australia)

BUT, the good news is you can just shorten the '81+ keys and they will work fine.
Try NOT to use the longer keys in the series 1 as that wears the cylinder in the back and will eventually ruin it.

Just have the keymaker shorten the later model blank.
