I messed up
So I was rebuilding the carb to my 85 RX7 GS and after a full day of confusion i got it back together in one piece. the last part that needed to go on were the fuel inlet bolts. it was kinda late so i rushed putting them on and ended up stripping the thread hole for the fuel inlet bolts. now it goes in crooked and gas is spewing out when i turn on the car. after putting that much work on rebuilding it i'd hate to have to just buy a new carb. is there any way to rethread the hole or possibly just buy the top section of the carb. thanks
|
you can try rethreading it, i would start with that. if theres enough material left it should still hold the banjo snug enough to not leak.
sounds like you crossthreaded it, not stripped. two completely different things. you also likely need a new banjo bolt too and sealing washers, a single damaged thread will put you right back where you were. |
I took it off and went in straight and it actually is stripped. It won’t catch at all. I think the rods bent as I took them off because when I reassembled there was a gap about a quarter inch on each side. I think that’s why the screws went in at the wrong angle. Just curious as to why they use such soft metal in there?

it's just aluminum, care would avoid the issue. if it won't go in by finger, using a ratchet isn't any better of an idea to force a bolt in.
at this point you're better off finding another used carb and robbing it for parts. do not bother with those epoxy thread repair kits you find at the auto parts stores, they're hot garbage and restrip like melting butter, only now you have more of a mess to clean up and are out $15. this is one of those places where you don't want to try and rig it to kind of work. last thing you need is for the bolt to come loose on a nice hot summer day and your car to turn into a summertime christmas tree. this particular bolt holds the highest pressure fuel in place on the whole vehicle, granted it's only a few psi but if it comes completely off that's a whole lot of fuel going right onto the hot engine and exhaust. |
I found a guy parting out his rx7 and he said he'd give me the carb for $50. he's supposed send me a picture of it later. fingers crossed that its the same one. if it is a different model will i still be able to use it?
|
cool, it is the same one so I'm gonna pick that up and switch the top section on them. just wanna share a few pictures with you guys. i just wanna make sure its safe to drive before i take it for a spin. the previous owner made some "custom" modifications.

jeebus, that thing is a hot mess, i don't think anyone could really say it's safe to drive as it sits :P
|
yea haha. i know it will be a while before i drive it. just trying to piece it together first. my goal is to have a street legal but fast drift car. just a project, don't want to spend a ton of money. its more for learning and having fun in the process, so a frugal budget is mandatory

definitely replace that abomination of a lower rad hose......is that a fuel filter on the return line????? and I don't even want to imagine how obnoxiously loud that thing is with a cherry bomb dumping in front of the rear tires, oh and BTW, get a second alternator belt, your engine will thank you |
Cool, so I got the carb on with new gaskets on it. Started it and it smoked for a little and cut off. I tried a few times and it kept cutting off. From my understanding gas is supposed to spray out of the four little golden rods in the center of each hole. Well nothing is coming out of there... I soaked every part in carb cleaner solution for about 20 minutes each. Should I do longer? Are they possibly clogged? Any way to tell if they are?
|
do you have gas in your float sight glass? should be at halfway on both
|
yes. its actually a little higher than half but i set the floats to .63in x 2.0in as the manual said.

I'm curious if you've gotten your FB running again. I see a lot of potential in the car.
