how much power can i get out of a 6th series 3rd gen (RX-7)?
 

I was looking around on youtube the other day, and i found a video of an 8 second 3rd generation RX-7. It was SICK!! anyway, i was curious to know if that much power would be possible on a stock 6th series 3rd gen RX-7 engine? and if not, what is the most power i could get out of the stock engine?

There are some FDs with 13b engines that attain that speed, but very very few. And although it's a stock sized engine there is nothing else stock about them.

I would never recommend an FD as a drag car platform. It requires large drivetrain upgrades and loads of upgraded parts to go fast. It's easier to start with a big block.

As for a streetable FD's drag capabilities, I suppose 10s and 11s are reasonable for a highly modified 13b with single turbo.

Ok, so would it be reasonable to modify a 13b to run 10's? Or would it just be better to engine swap the whole thing?

Pretty much, since i'm not rich, i want to figure out the cheapest most efficient way to get an FD to run 10's. even 11's would be awesome. I want to be able to beat my dad's car (Sentra SE-R. SR20 with turbo, and NOS) and my brother's car (240sx with an RB25, and turbo).

If you're set on making a car that wasn't designed to drag race do it anyway, you'd be best off going with a 1st gen. They're the lightest rx-7 and are significantly cheaper than the others. Upgrade the suspension and drivetrain to your liking and then drop in your powerplant of choice.

Well, if you want to 1) make 10s 2) on an FD 3) for very little money, that's a case of pick two out of the three. FDs are not cheap drag cars.

your major downfall here is the "little money" part. for a 10 sec fd, it requires "big money" thousands into the drivetrain.

example... i have a friend who owns a shop and does his own work. to get his FD into the high tens, and stay together (read: 3 rearend and a trans), he has over $6000 into his engine/drivetrain, not including electronics.

in my 1st gen, i have about $3500 into drivetrain, and im hoping for mid 11s

not trying to discourage you, just trying to say these are not civics, and usually can't be done cheap.

Beat them on a road course. Straight lines are fast cars, curves are fast drivers. But still, how fast a RX-7 is usually is directly porportional to the amount of money spent, and then the engine blows.

stock engine with power fc, removed vaccum lines, removed accesories, majority of bolt-ons, stock twins non-sequential with a good enough tune 300 +/- hp. depends on the condition of the motor and everything else.

Building a fast FD is not cheap, hell owning an FD is not cheap. If you are looking for fast car for a cheap spending budget you should have bought a honda and an Egay turbo kit.

Ok, by me saying i want to do it cheap, i meant, preferably under 10-grand. could i get one running 10's or 11's for that much? i was planning on saving over a couple of years, and then buying the car, accessories, and electronics. maybe even buying the car, and then slowly souping it up.

(and by the way, my dad, and my brother are both mechanics. so i guess i could save on shop work. i also know a guy with a professional shop, and he's a great mechanic, he builds some of the best engines in the country, and races them out at boneville, UT. i don't know if any of that would really help, but im hoping.)

Under 10K or atleast that amount total it can easily be done. You just have to get the right stuff and use it correctly.

400-450 hp - Streetport, Power FC, injectors, Single turbo T-04S probably and you should be good to go. There are of course the smaller stuff that's too many to list, but throw a post over in the single turbo section and start building a list of mods the engine will need done plus some drivetrain upgrades that will also be needed.

If you do everything right and the parts don't have to be new but used in good condition will save ya a few bucks if not more.
