Gen 2 85 RX7?
Okay well here is what I've got.
Its a 1985 GSL-SE with a 13B engine. I've looked through every picture in the GEN1 forum and come to the conclusion its a Gen2, but the car was infact made in 1985. Its a four seater and resides in the USA. Anyone got any info on the car is it worth anything more? One last thing, am I able to remove the engine without dropping the tranny? The bolts seem to be accessible from the engine bay. Sorry for a non full shot, slipped my mind when pulling apart the engine. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/DSC03450.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/DSC03433.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/DSC03433.jpg |
What you have there is a 86 model that was built in 85 (hence the date sticker on the door). It being a 2+2 is kind of rare.
|
Kinda rare as in, I should leave the car stock.
Or kinda rare like a standard Camry. On another note, the car was manufactured in 84 from the VIN, and purchased in Feb of 85. |
OK lets back up. Do you have a picture of the car? Also, I said you have a second gen as you have a 2nd gen engine in the car.
What is the VIN? Kinda rare like there were not many at all made in the US with rear seats. I cant remember the percentage but it was pretty low. |

Ill try to get a full body shot of the car tonight, but notice the hood style, its not straight across like the Gen 1 cars. |
|
from these pictures its an s4. meaning its a second gen manufactured between 86-88? i believe. BUT as for the VIN i always thought the ones have FB or SA in the beginning where that of a first gen. got me puzzled
|
Clearly second gen, but the build date and VIN don't mesh with that.
|
clearly a FC, but if the manufactured date is after june 1985 then its a 86 model, i saw awhile back with a guy selling a 1985 on ebay but its kinda obvious when you look at the pics and see its a FC

Okay SPECIAL MOMMENT.
The paper work that was combined with one of the many RX7s in our possession got mixed up. We only have 1 Red rx7 but have two titles with different VINs. Long story short this is a 86 RX7 Progress Picture! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/DSC03479.jpg |
I was gonna mention to check the VIN that is stamped into the firewall. Much harder to change the factory stamped part rather than the little plate simply riveted onto the firewall or the one on the dash.
On the other hand, having mixed up titles is also a way of getting mixed up (obviously lol). Glad everything got worked out and looks like a good start to a fun project. |
haha thats pretty funny everything got mixed up. but good thing everything got worked out though.

Here I am waiting for my adapter from PR. I guess I can start cleaning up parts now.

Any tips on cleaning up parts? Specific cleaners things to no do or watch out for?
Anything external im trying to get the grim off any rust and spaying some engine temp paint onto of. But oil pan and timing belt im not exactly too used to cleaning.. So far. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/DSC03500.jpg |
I used some wd40 to clean my engine bay up alittle. it works okay.
|
well i found out that if there are bearing near it dont use brake clean, idk why but when searchin how to overhaul the GSR tranny they told me not to use that cause of the bearings.
|
What you have is a concept. It had the 13B from a first gen. Produced in 85-85 when they were toying with changing the Body style. My friend Holly, who works for Jiom Downing in Atlanta, got to drive one to Deals Gap this year. The model she had was the 6th one made. They are rare. Keep it as stock as possible. I am PMing her now, as she know more about the particulars and can help you out more!

unless u wanna repack ur bearings u dont use brake cleaner, it will cut thru the grease in the bearings like it was nothing

Note the fuel rail on the intake manifold, the Dynamic Chamber on the upper intake, and the CAS with direct fire coils. It has secondary injectors. -The GSL-SE's (1st gen with 13B) engine had only two injectors. Rated at 680cc/min, they were located on the center iron. -The FC has two sets of injectors. One pair on the center iron rated at 500some odd cc/min and a pair in the intake that fires up at 4000+ RPM. The Dynamic Chamber says "13B Injection" and has fins on it. -The GSL-SE's Dynamic Chamber said "RE-EGI" for Rotary Engine - Electronic Gas Injection" and was smooth on the sides. -The S4 FC has the "13B Injection" and fins. It has a CAS with a dual output leading coil and selective direct fire trailing coils. -The FC has a very sophisticated ignition system. I don't think you can find a better performing coil on any other engine aside from LSx engines. -The GSL-SE has a distributor and standard oil filled coils on the fender. Observe: 1st Gen 13B: http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/DSC07672.jpg http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/DSC07673.jpg S4 FC N/A 13B: http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/d...7/101_0456.jpg http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/d...7/101_0459.jpg http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/d...7/101_0458.jpg What he has there is an S4 GXL. (Note the wiring going to the strut towers. Indicates it has Electronic Adjustable Suspension. I'll bet if he takes a pic of teh interior, there'll be a switch in front of the mirror controls in the center console for "Sport" and "Normal" modes of shock absorber stiffness. The GXL is the ONLY model to come with this feature. It should also come with the Clutch type LSD, Power everything, and many of them were 2+2. (Mine is) If he's REALLY early like mine and like the example pic above, he has the coolant overflow bottle over by the leading coil pack and fuse block on the driver's side. I think they moved it to the front on later years because people kept spilling coolant all over the electronics. |
I have the same car, gxl made in june 86

OK, apparently those pics and all the differences of the pre-production are on another forum. I don't think it applies to the FC described here though.
