Gas tank not sealed
 

Hello everyone, over the past wheekend I installed a wrx fuel pump and manual wiring into my 88 gtu, just because I had it laying around and hey it could be a performance upgrade if I ever decide to turbo, the problem I had was all of the screws holding the cap on we're completely rusted and stuck in the tank, so I drilled the heads of the bolts and chiseled the head off. To reseal I put grease on self tappers and drilled them into the holes, then put an automotive adhesive around the cap for a complete seal. It seams to be holding well but I'm still getting a slight fuel smell in the cabin when it's parked for a while. Anybody else have this problem and care to share there solution to remount the cap in a better way then I did?

I don't think anybody on here will have a wrx pump in there rx7.

Your only viable solution is to Pull the tank and replace or retap the flange OR get another used tank.
I did the same thing years ago,thinking it would seal up and the damn thing just leaked.

That's mostly what I'm trying to avoid, but today was a bit warmer and might have let the adhesive set, can't smell gas anymore but we'll see how it goes...

You shouldn't have popped the heads of the fasteners off...common problem. Slotting the heads with a Dremel and removing with a large flat head has never failed me.

The thing I found was when you try to get at the screws through the rear deck floor is that you can only Get at it so much..and that is where the problem lays.
you tend to strip the philips head and then you get all afraid that you'll blow up when you grind the heads off..haha!
Anyhow IF you manage to get the sender unit off there should still be a portion of screw that can be grabbed with a set of Vice grips (Soak the shit out of the screws though and have patience)
I noticed though that due to to the room restriction I just said "enough" and pulled the tank anyways as it wasn't all that hard to do.
Now when I strip a car I take the tank just in case I want to upgrade the pump.
They make nice Fume emitting Bombs in the back of the garage ..So If I really hate a guy he can smoke back there..lol!
