Gas smell & fuel sending unit

I've got a 1983 RX-7 that's in excellent condition. I drive it every day. Recently, the fuel gauge stopped registering, so I can't tell how much gas I have in the car. However, the needle moves when I put gas in the car, but after a little while the needle drops below empty and stays there eventhough there's plenty of gas in the car. Could this be the fuel sending unit? Also, I've been smelling gas inside the car. It's more noticeable after I've driven the car. Could this be related to the sending unit? Normally, I'd drive the car into Nelson Enterprises and get it checked out, but he closed shop.. so I don't know where to go to get it checked. I'm thinking it's time to get rid of the car.. since I've owned it for 25 years. Breaking up is hard to do tho!

Thanks for any and all help!

Yes, your fuel level sender is likely bad.

Fuel smell in the car is going to be from the engine bay. Search for fuel leaks; you don't want to have gas drip onto the hot exhaust and set the car on fire.
