Front mount intercooler
I have a 88 turbo 2. I was interested in getting a front mount intercooler for it but I have friends telling me not too. Some friends are saying I will breathe better with a FMIC and some are saying I will over heat. I am only looking into this because the hose that goes from the mass air flow sensor to the engine is shredded and I can’t find one anywhere. Should I keep looking for this hose or go with the FMIC |
Not up on the T2. How does changing the IC from a top mount to front mount cure your Intake hose issue? And seems like if you stay with the stock turbo, a FMIC would be a bit of overkill anyway.. Lastly, I don’t like FMIC’s for a street car, at least on the FD. Aside from the cost, alot more plumbing, fabrication, cutting of the bumper and usually relocating things like the battery. It also leaves the IC exposed to slow animals and road debris. But probably most importantly, you’re placing a big heat-sink in front of the radiator and IMO that makes no sense for a car that’s not dedicated for the track. |
So the hose that is spilt on my car I can’t find anywhere and where I find it, it cost like 300$ and that’s coming from Japan so I would have to pay shipping. If I bought a FMIC it would replace that hose and the mass air flow sensor all together. That’s why I was asking. I pretty sure I can find the hose I this forums but I haven’t really started looking yet due to the fact I won’t be hom for a few more months.

Get your post count to 10 ;) |
Welcome to the board. :)

You said the hose was "shredded", so in lieu of a photo of the hose itself, it might be helpful to post a photo of where the hose goes. Someone may have ideas for other options besides an OEM part. |
well I been in Afghanistan for awhile but if I remember correctly it’s the hose that connects to the mass airflow sensor and I think it has the blow off valve on it as well. Plus I can’t figure out how to post pictures or I would lol. It’s not working for some reason. It’s a big hose |

Pretty sure it’s called a air intake hose. |
Okay, I have never owned a T2, so let me get that out there first. That said, I don't think that hose has anything to do with the intercooler. I've seen the OEM intercooler and I don't remember anything other rubber hoses (shaped) running to it.
My best guess is that hose would be taking air from either the filter box to the AFM or from the AFM to the turbo. I don't know which, but that's not relevant. What is relevant is you can likely make something to replace it out of intake piping, silicone couplers and hose clamps - that is assuming you cannot find a replacement for sale. |

So this is the actual hose. I had my wife take a picture of it. This hose ran to my mass air flow sensor if I remember correctly and then another hose from this hose ran up to the top of the turbo and the blow off valve. If I got a FMIC it would replace all that. That’s why I was asking. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...0e95fb2b9.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1641a7236.jpeg |

The only reason I can imagine you think a FMIC is going to remove the turbo inlet duct (TID, the proper name for this part in question), is because most of the kits include an elbow and filter to accommodate a higher output turbo system which needed the intercooler and filter and other supporting modifications in the first place.
Let's be clear, you cannot just delete the AFM...you WILL need a stand-alone ECU to get the car to run without the AFM. If your car is stock, just replace the TID and motor on. Many years ago Corksport made an aluminum TID. If you find one now, you'll pay several hundred dollars for it. You could always have someone fab one up for you, likely around the same cost as you'll spend on one of the knockoff Greddy intercoolers on eBay. |
Going fmic for the sole purpose of replacing that hose is throwing the baby out with the bath water. Could get a few silicone elbows and a lengtg of rigid pipe and remake that pretty easily. |
An FMIC would not replace that hose in any manner at all. Try repairing the hose with some tape to get it to seal, you could look for a used hose in the range of 20$. FMIC will raise your coolant temps because youre putting a wall in front of the radiator and the airspeed slows down after passing through it.

I got the new TID. |
My 88 build included a street porting job. I'm in the middle of installing a front mounted intercooler and better radiator. FMIC piping forced me to change over to manual steering (P/S pump was in the way). Yes I still have to figure out the AFM and air filter. Computer chipped and bigger fuel injectors. There is a lot of work and will take time and money.

Not a T2 guy, but did put a front mount in my old FD and regretted it. The front mount was great while I was moving and air flowed through it, but my water temps suffered in stop-go traffic with the FMIC blocking the radiator.
