CA Fixing messed up/aging rearview mirrors

The rearview mirror in my 85 is (like every one I've seen of the same vintage) "fogged", i.e. the silver coating has been damaged or was of such original poor quality that it looks like the mirror is "infected" around the edges.

I gather this can happen as a result of glass cleaner seeping in at the edge and damaging the mirror surface.

In any event, I've successfully removed the glass, and am now looking to resilver the mirror.

I've called around to a bunch of glass and mirror places but no one seems to resilver mirrors.

Has anyone here done this, any suggestions on where to get this done?

Take it to a glass company or a hardware store that cuts glass. Have them cut a new mirror. Ace hardware has cut several outside and inside rear view mirrors for my vehicles.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot.

Do they have the variable-thickness glass used in the rearview?

Don't forget about the day/night function of the original mirror either. Would a hardware store carry that type of mirror?
