Howdy! I am thinking about biting the bullet and buying my long time dream car: a FD Rx-7. I currently own a mint 2009 Rx-8 R3 with 30k miles on it and would be selling or trading it to buy an FD.


They just seem so overpriced these days! I remember looking at them only 8 years ago and you could buy a nice running car for $15k. Now you can't find one for less than $25k. Does anyone think this will be a bubble that will pop? The Rx-8s seems oddly under appreciated now these days also. Can you drive these cars a lot? My concern isn't so much the 13bREW, but more so all of the plastic and rubber components in the car. I don't like driving my 8 R3 a ton because the seats are very tight and it has such low miles. The 7 is a car that I have always dreamed of driving everywhere and is truly a bucket list car. I am looking for a stock one or one with a reliable single turbo set up and around 100k miles.

 

The FD prices will momentarily dip when the economy crashes again and people have to sell them fast to get readily available funds to pay their mortgage while they sell their house.

I was able to pick mine up after the 2008 crash $14,500 for 39k mile R1. Probably wont be that cheap again, but probably will be around that price for a 100k mile one.

if you don't like driving your Rx8 because of you feel its a tight car.... or maybe just the R3 seats??..... you will hate the rx7 on longer trips its a real sports car not a touring small 4 door 'sporty' car. especially if you're above 5'8" i owned an rx8 for 10 years and it was a better car to drive everyday/ long trips by far! and was a nicer car by a lot with better interior quality no squeaks, clunks etc.. also not a money pit like the fd

i do not think you will see a huge dip in the prices depending on your area etc. They are only going up here in Canada by a lot... but we also do not have many original lhd models in good shape.

i barely drive mine but enjoy owning it; that's what important to me. when i wanted to have a sporty car for every day i drive the rx-8...... good luck hunting, i would really evaluate what's important to you.

 

I am coming from rx8 too and yursivicsux is dead on. I used to so 350 miles ride on my rx8. I did that only once on my fd and that was it, never again.
Rx8 is a fine ride and fd is rough freaking fast back breaker. The fd is not beter as dd than the fd as confort comes

 

Has anyone rode in the R3 Recaros though? They are what is tight about the car, not so much the space, but then again I have never rode in an FD...

 

Not sure what's consider as long trip, but I had no problem doing 3-400 miles round trip in my FD when it had stock exhaust, touring seat is super comfortable.

 

I own both a RX-8 R3 and a 94 FD. Definitely agree with the other posts that if you don't enjoy driving your 8 around because the roads are "tight" you won't like the ride of the FD. The cars are very different, I enjoy my FD on nice days and the 8 for daily duty and longer trips. Regarding the price bubble for FDs, I think nicer examples will continue to be expensive as there are only so many left. Cars needing some work are out there and can be found for under $19k.

 

20 years ago, you could find a Porsche 911 for 10k or so. Now try to find a clean air-cooled 911 for under 30k.

What makes a car collectable and does the FD deserve it?
Rare. Check
Fast. Check
Good looking. Check

I believe a stock low mile FD will continue to gain value for decades. They may never go into the million dollar range like some Ferraris and Porsches now, but I think a mint Spirit R might hit 6 figures one day. Just like a TT 6 speed Supra will.

I don't see the fd pricing dropping.

As Tom mentioned it is simply supply and demand. The rx7 imo is starting its "Supra" value.

Haggerty listed it as one of the growing value cars to look out for this year I believe.
