Fc3s wont go into gear with engine on idle

Hi guys,

I am new to here, but am looking for some help. Last weekend i travelled 4 hours to finally get my hands on a Rx7. I took a big gamble buying a FC S4 that did not go, I travelled all the way home to pull it off the trailer and start getting to work on it. I got the engine going - timing was incorrect and it had the wrong set of spark plugs in it.

I was glad, Time to take for it for a drive. Hold up, I could not seem to get it into gear once the engine was on. The gearbox seems to shift fine when the engine is off.

so that being that i dropped the gearbox. Check the clutch and pressure plate which both seemed fine. clutch had a slight bit of un-even wear but nothing major. The pilot bearings seal was gone and it had cause a bit of grease to get onto the clutch plate. Not alot tho. I brought a brand new pilot bearing and seal from Mazda and have installed both, I re-installed the clutch and pressure plate with a aligning tool. and the gearbox pop in nice and easy.

When i had the gearbox out. I run the box though each gear turning the input shaft and holding the output. The gearbox seems fine!

I put it all back together, even with a new slave cylinder and the the problem is still there. Is there something i could have missed? I have done some research and everything comes back to the clutch not disengaging.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am so looking forward to having a drive of my first rotary!

I have played around with many old toyotas and hondas and have never come across a problem like this!

Thanks
Jamie

Welcome to the board, Jamie. :)

Have you confirmed that the slave is moving when you press the pedal? Have you confirmed that the fork is not damaged (bent, etc.)? If both of those things check out fine, and you have done a thorough bleed, then I'd say look to the master. I haven't heard you mention the telltale pedal-sticking-to-the-floor-symptom, but I suppose it's not necessarily a prerequisite 100% of the time.

Hi, Thanks

I have checked with a friend that the slave is moving the fork correctly which it is. When i had the gearbox out, thats the one thing i did not do check the fork. Is it common for the forks in them to either bend or crack?

I will have a look at the master, but if the slave is working correctly would that not indicate that the master is also working correctly?

I wouldn't consider it a common thing. I've only known it to happen once - not to me, but someone else.

Yeah, the fact that the slave is moving the fork suggests that the master is fine, but stranger things have happened. That said, do you have a copy of the FSM? You can get one here: Foxed.ca

I've never had to perform this on my FC (since I've yet to drive it), but I know on the FB there is an adjustment that you can make at the pedal. Maybe you can look into it and see if the FC does have that adjustment and if it helps you any.

I have had a go trying to adjust the pedal and i think it has made a change, i tired starting it with in gear and the clutch pedal in, it doesn't seem to jump. sadly my battery has gone flat.

However if i decrease the clutch pedal ever so slightly it wants to jump forward on turn on over. i will adjust it some more and see what happens

Got it sorted

Car has been maunal converted, The clutch pedal was jamming on a bracket under the dash. Which was not allowing the pedal to make a full push. I cut the bracket out and adjusted the bracket on the back of the pedal and it all worked fine!

Thanks for the help!

That is great. No way I would have thought about that. I'm glad you got it sorted out. Go enjoy the fruits of your labor now. :)
