fc 5 lug conversion

Hey Im planning on doing a 5 lug conversion on my 86 fc but I'm in the dark as to what I need, how much it will cost (roughly), and what a good doner car will be. Id appreciate any little bit of info on the subject. Also Ill be doing the work along side mechanics I trust but any procedural info is also welcome. Thanks.

The front is easy.
you can just change the bearing hub assembly and caliper. The shields just need a 'little finesse".Trust me,I just did this without changing the spindle on the front.(4 bolt to 5 bolt). The Flex lines of the 4 bolt will screw into the Four piston brakes but it is always nice to do it right and get the Flex line and small piece of steel line that attaches to the Caliper..I mean it is a Safety factor,Right?
The backs..hmm.
well if you can get the spindle/hub assembly off without Killing the Toe Bushing, then you can just swap out.
I did it a little different,as I got the whole 5 bolt subframe, and just opted to pull the 4 bolt subframe.
I didn't want to deal with Toe Bushings,DTSS or replacing bushings, etc.
The 5 lug brake calipers are vented,so a little thicker and "taller".So you need the 5lug brakes or they will not fit the rotor.the Rotor will just hit the inside of the bracket.

And as far as a doner car?

diabolical1 04-11-13 09:18 PM

unless I missed something, why would you try to complicate this by using anything other than a 5-lug FC as the donor car?

Sorry to make it unclear. Would it benefit me to swap in turbo ii parts versus other 5 lug rx7s? Or is there no difference.

you would be looking for cars with 4 piston front calipers...TII and verts.

t2 is compatable so y use anything else i did this swap on my 88 and didnt notice much difference but the five lug was nice

instead of creating another thread for 5 lug conversion, my question is will the rear 4 lug caliper work with the 5 lug bracket? Cuz my parts car rear caliper are sieze but the bracket is fine. THX

The brakes are slightly different and they allow the caliper, etc to clear the rotors at different heights.
You may not be able to use your 4lug set on the five lug as it will rub.
Then again if you do the opposite then you are not using all the contact surface of the rotor as the caliper will sit UP on the top of the rotor.

Plus the 4 lug is a solid disc and the 5 lug brakes are vented.
