FB Straight pipe
What's up guys, I have an 83 LE and I need to redo the exhaust. I was thinking of a cat back straight pipe but a friend of mine says fb's need back pressure. Any ideas?

The only pressure you are gonna get is from everyone telling you to "shut that Damn car OFF"..as it is too Freakin Loud.
If you like your hearing, and your teeth intact in your skull as they would get rattled out on a drive uptown,Don't even consider straight pipe. It's just downright annoying. |
RX-7's definitely do not need backpressure but as misterstyx69 noted, your ears will bleed with a straight pipe.
If you want to remove the cats, put in a resonator packed with stainless steel. Don't use fiberglass is it will melt in a few days. rx7.com sells a custom-fit resonator for a very reasonable fee which is a bolt-in replacement for all the cats on your car. You can then shop around for a suitable muffler. I've used Borla Turbo mufflers with great success, they drop the noise substantially and sound great. You also can't go wrong with Racing Beat. |

My car has that RX7.com straight pipe on it and the flange that mounts to the header warped and caused an exhaust leak.

So doing from the resonator back would work?
|
I can tell you I have a stock port 12a with custom straight pipes hooked up to a stock muffler and I love it. It does get a bit loud when you really get on it (but isn't that part of the fun?) but when im simply cruising around I find it to be nothing offensive. It has an awesome tone too!!

Hmm. Okay, well I think I'm going to try to go for just a straight pipe from the resonator. If it's too loud I'll just snag a muffler. Thanks guys

Just for info's sake, here is how my old race-jalopy sounded in-car during a run:
That sound came from the RB collected header, to a mini RB presilencer (the '79 and '80 presilencers are half-length compared to '81 and up) to a Magnaflow 4 inch round silencer to a 5x9 Borla oval center in/offset out muffler. The end result was low, bassy and powerful, with no buzzing or tinniness. The rattling noise in the video was the R-tires picking up stones and flinging them against the undercarriage. Our parking lot was in poor shape and the pavement was starting to come up. No matter how much sweeping we did, there was always more gravel to fling about. |
