Exhaust system options to replace old one with hole

Hi All,

I am new to RX-7 club. I have a RX-7 FB Mk1 1980 with a 12A engine. This is a UK version and the thermal reactor has been removed and replaced by a 2 to 1 manifold pipe section.

The car had a non-stock exhaust replacement but unsure who it was made by. It consists of 2 to 1 manifold to about in line with the steering wheel, then a center section with a small muffler (i think) in the middle, then a curved pipe over the rear axle to the muffler box with one tail pipe. It must be steel not stainless as it is rusty from the manifold back and the rear muffler has been patch up once. The manifold is in good condition but the rest of it needs replacing. The current pipe diameter is 2" all the way along the system. The exhaust system has a hole in it next to the flange on the center section closest to the front of the car.

I am looking for an exhaust that isn't much loader than stock. At least for it to be quieter than it is now with the hole after the manifold.

I have heard conflicting advice from rotary engine specialist.
One said you need special mufflers as the heat and pressure from the rotary engine are too much for standard mufflers and the baffles inside will not last very long.
The other said the exhaust system is just a pipe and you don't need a special muffler.
Which one is right?

If I do need a special muffler then what would be a good one for longevity?

Sorry for the very long post and really appreciate your help.

It's true that a rotary will destroy sub-par exhaust parts, so stick with Racing Beat for tried and true results that will keep the car reasonable but pro no funded when you put your right foot down. I have a RB cat back on my 20B FC and it sounds like a bone stock FC, it purrs that quietly
