Exaust and rolll bar questions

1. I'm na and on the quest to gain more horsepower. I have a cone air filter. Now I've moved onto exhaust. I know racing beat has a good cat back kit but I'm on a budget. I've seen cheap cat backs but I wanted to stay away from the junk. I was think of buy a flow master super 40 muffler and mounting before the Y pipe and cutting of stock mufflers and just putting on chrome tips? Has anyone done this? Thoughts and opinions?

2. I have a 91 vert and have been unable to find a roll bar that will work with the top. I know there was another thread on this but I wasn't impressed with it answers. Can you post some pictures.

a roll bar and a budget do not mix.

welcome to the board. :)

my advice would be wait and save your money until you can afford a decent exhaust system. i like all of RB's systems and would recommend them to anyone that will listen, but i understand that they're not for everyone.

that said, if i understood the description of your plan, then don't bother. no offense, but you referenced "cheap" catbacks and then suggested basically adding a midstream muffler and removing the rears. i don't get it.

you can always the leave the car alone while you buy parts (mufflers, pipes, etc.) and then have a local shop weld something up for you. it may or may not end up cheaper, but at least it will defray the costs a bit and also it will be done right (or much closer to it). plus you can get advice on parts and technical tidbits from the board.

as for your roll bar question, i defer to misterstyx69's comment above.

If you took off the 2 OE mufflers and replaced it with one, if the new setup wasn't less restrictive than the old I would expect it to very loud. How loud do you want to go is one thing to consider and can be difficult to assess. On my FD I bought a new catback and replaced it within a few weeks just because of the sound volume.

I'm sure you can find some info on this site and Mazdatrix has a good narrative on their site of their experiences with exhausts.

actually ... i forgot to mention a major point i wanted to put out there when i started typing my earlier response. if power is your goal, then you have to figure a header in there somewhere.

Maybe a check of priorities is in order. Your budget doesn't allow for a quality cat-back, but you're looking to spend money on a roll-bar?

rB sounds awesome for exhaust but heard you don't gain any power

As far as the idea to put a Flowmaster on, DON'T DO IT EVER!!!! I had an '85 FB back in high school and I foolishly put on a Flowmaster. WORST DRONE EVER! I know I am sounding like an ass, but if you want an exhaust that is proven, get the full Racing Beat header back exhaust and remove the air pump. There are threads dedicated to emissions removal on the 13B.

although RB documents proof,it is not substantiated at those numbers..
BUT there is an increase.

Really think about it this way: there is a fire..would you use the garden hose or the Fire hose?.
Which would flow better?..Dinky 1.75 inch exhaust pipe or 2.5 inch exhaust?

I have a RB and I personally don't like it.. not much better flow than I already had and it doesn't sound very good either.. just my .02

A friend of mine had a RB Header, two silencers, and a generic Magnaflow that sounded rather nice. Can't say about power increase, but for us when we were in high school, it was fast enough.

I have the dual racing beats on my fc ! Sounds loud for sure !

If the cone filter does not have a custom duct that allows it to avoid sucking hot air from the back of the radiator, then your engine will most likely have LESS power than it did with the original filter.

Rotary engines blow out the baffles in Flow Master mufflers, then they rattle and drone like crazy, and their warranty is voided by rotary engines. Do NOT use a Flow Master on your car. If you want something cheap, then go with Rotary Performance (rx7.com) or Pace Setter. Personally, I would spend the extra money on the higher-quality Racing Beat exhaust. There is little performance difference, so if you are short on money then don't bother replacing the exhaust until the current exhaust system wears out.

I think you will need a custom bar. As others have indicated, a bar is pretty much just for show, and the extra weight will make your car slower, so it is not something that you should buy if your budget is tight.
