Engine swap

Hello my name is Paul I am 16 and the proud owner of a 1988 mazda rx7. I saved for a long time to buy this car which has a blown engine. I have found a replacement engine for the car, but it is a 13bt/turbo and I have just a blown 13b. I am wanting to buy the engine but I would like to know: Do you have to change the computer system on the car if you are upgrading to a turbo engine If not do you have to replace anything at all?

I love pop-up lights 09-12-08 02:27 AM

Would you happen to know what year car the turbo motor came out of?

What he said.^ Lets start with what year is the new motor? 87-88=S4 89-91 S5.

There are a bunch of things that will need to be swapped. Its even more work if its a S5 motor into a S4 car.

The engine with the turbo I am looking at buying is a 86-88 uncut complete wiring and comes with the ecu/computer system what else would I need to put in it and what it be better to buy a rebult 13b for about 600 just base motor I would have to transfer a lot of parts but I would like to know which would get my car runnig sooner I can worry about going faster latter. Thanks for replying.

OK

Depends on your budget, and it sounds like you should try to stick with a NA

BUT I will tell you what you are going to have to do to swap that Turbo II motor into the NA, and maintain the NA drivetrain.

OK

If you are getting a S4 Turbo II with a uncut wiring harness and a ECU and you have a S4 FC.

Pull the NA motor, leave the trans in the car. On the Turbo II pull the clutch and install the NA motors clutch onto the TII Engine. The NA and TII clutch's have different size splines. You can install a NA clutch into a turbo, but you cant install a Turbo Clutch into a NA Flywheel. The turbo clutch is bigger.

Now the motor is ready to drop in.

Pull the entire NA engine harness out of the car, and the computer. Install new TII Computer and wiring harness. Install wiring harness onto TII motor if it wasn't on there when you bought the motor.

Now hookup the Oil lines, Fuel Lines, Coolant, ect.

You are going to have to buy a TII Fuel Pump or a Aftermarket fuel pump, the aftermarket pump is a better choice, about 90 bucks.

That is a ROUGH NA to TII Swap, if you have anymore questions just ask on this thread.

And Welcome to the Club

I have a 86 rx7 that I am saving to build. But I think that I am going to have someone do the swap and build. I am very new to drifting and rotarys. I came from a family of american muscle freaks.
