Engine ID marks?
 
are there any numbers or identifying marks that my help identify the engine year and posibly the car type it came from? (example: the series # on my 350 block)

Good question...I know everyone can see the 12A or 13B stamp on the top of the block and the "T" and "L" around the spark plugs but are you meaning stuff like this?

Those are all pics of stampings on a 1971 Pontiac 455 HO block I have...with all the numbers stamped on it, you can decipher where it was cast, what shift did the casting, what displacement the engine has, is it a regular block or high performance block, what car it was going into, was it manual or auto and also the last digits of the VIN of the actual car are stamped in it as well. I'm not aware if Mazda had anything close to this for the rotary engines.

At least with 2nd gen engines, there are no marks/numbers to identify them. There are some numbers stamped on the front iron, but I've never read anything that tells what they might mean. The differences in ports, housings, irons, front covers, etc... will give clues about the engine's identity.

thanks for all the intel and your patients. this is my second week for rotary research and im still divin in head first. so how would the ports, housings, irons, front covers, etc... give the clues? is there another posting on this that i need to scope out?

na and fd= no coolant passages by the intake ports but the fd will have the oil return on the front cover and the rear oil cooler line goes into the oil filter pedistal instead of the block.

turboII= coolant passage on rear housing by intake port, as well as a passage on the lower neck of the wp housing. also has oil feed coming out of the front iron on the drivers side and oil return line on front cover.

the turboII and na will have the same oil pan but the fd motor has a different style pan.

there are plenty more but i just woke up and dont feel like writing a book :icon_tup:
