Driving with No exhuast.

Is this a bad idea? MY exhuast ends before the cat, and im just trying to get it running right now and get it on the road. Is it a bad idea to drive it with out an exhuast cause i read that these cars tend to shoot flames and just spit flames out the exhuast. I dont want my car on fire , Its a stock n/a so i dont know if they spit flame. But just want to know your opinions.

It's not the flames ya gotta worry about, it's yer dang hearing. Uncorked RX-7 "headers" are louder than most normal V8 racecars...it's almost impossible to sit in one w/o earplugs and a helmet and that was just my experience with a big streetport 12A with a bone stock Nikki carburetor!

If you think that is loud, you are in for a surprise.

Besides from loudness and flames, will somebody have also to consider for the lack of exhaust backpressure? I know in piston N/A engines backpressure is required.
Does the same apply for rotary engines?

Thanx!
Marios

I drove my 86 GXL for 2 months on open headers, all the cats were melted to the point where no exhaust came out. so they had to go. it is the most satanic, loud, awesome sound ever. as far as I know, it wont hurt anything. but yes it is EXTREMELY loud. I got pulled over the first week it was on open headers. the cop asked me if i was driving a 10 second car lol! if you go on open headers there are 3 things to keep in mind. you cant listen to your CD player. You cant carry on a conversation with a passenger in your car. make sure to rev and bust the eardrums of stupid ricers near you.

I've driven a SBC 350 with open headers in a '74 Chevy Nova about 5 miles on back roads to a local exhaust shop. I've driven the '68 Pro-Street Firebird with a modded Pontiac 400 cid V8 around the block with open headers, steel wheel tubs and a stripped floorboard, no carpet anywhere in sight.

They were not nearly as loud as that Rotary Performace Big Streetported 12A with an open "header"...the sound also has a top frequency "ring" to it that is absolute murder on your ears. It is unbelievably loud for just 1.1 freakin' liters.

I have to agree on the loudness. When we pulled the transmission to do my clutch right after buying my fc we fired it up just to see what it sounded like with the pipes off. That was insane. Had neighbors come over looking for a speedboat or something. Awesome but far more than I could deal with daily. Plus my neighbors would hate me more than the already do.

I can imagine their reaction when returning that way late at night from a ride and let it idle to cool down haha!!! I have the stock exhaust on my FC and still listen to complaints!!! Wooot!!!

My neighbors dont like me either, between the dirtbikes, lawn mower with no exhuast and loud trucks lol.

Nothing you have heard will be as loud as an open header rotary. The local drag strip told me to bolt my exhaust back up years ago when I had uncorked my manifold (back when my car was NA). And that was just after a jet dragster had pulled off a ~4 second run and actually broken a window in the timing tower.

The rotary engine is the most efficient way of converting fuel to noise ever invented.

is that a cute little piston hanging near your exhaust?

Aaron Cake 02-18-10 09:51 AM

I think that line has already been sigged several times.
