DIY FMIC on an S4
 
Hey guys new to the 7 but not to modification in general. I found some parts on craigslist that I got for a cheap 100 bucks and after seeing them sit for a few weeks in my garage, I figured maybe I can put them to use. Picked up a greddy front mount intercooler (the style commonly used on FCs), one of the nicer HKS blow off valves, and a six piece greddy intercooler piping kit, which I can't seem to find the original application vehicle for. In my research I noticed that it seems that everyone with an FC uses the CX racing or greddy compression tube, which allows the piping to run in a more out-of-the-way route towards the left strut tower. Looking at the stock intake tube that runs from the top mount intercooler to the throttle, it does have a pipe end to it that looks like it would work with some crafty pipe elbows. I'm not worried about piping the rest of the setup, just the pre-throttle area. Has anyone here had experience running a custom crafted front mount setup? Car is an 88 t2 that is all stock except for a swapped electric fan instead of the belt-driven fan.

This is not the answer you're looking for, but there is no positive results to be had with a FMIC on a stock car.

Plenty of people on here have experience with custom piping, but it's such a common platform at this point there's not much need when the pre-made kits you mentioned more or less fit okay. Things get MUCH easier with battery relocation and delete of PS/AC if applicable. Fit is always weird by the brake booster since the kits were modeled after RHD cars. Again, deleting some of the fluff accessories makes fitment much easier.

Have you looked at Aaron Cake's setup? I think it would give you some ideas on routing the plumbing in a manner that you're aiming for. Battery relocation is a good idea, and with the right plumbing routing will accommodate P/S & A/C without too much trouble. See my build (Project OldTree) for more ideas.

Thanks guys. Yeah I didn't mention the battery is already mounted in the trunk in a nice BMW x5 tray I picked up from work. And I will have to check that out since I am trying to make this work while keeping the a/c (my girl drives the car sometimes and she is one of those people who aren't satisfied with two windows and a sunroof lol). And as of now the car is stock, but my goal over the next couple years is about 300 crank hp so I'd like the fmic at some point anyway. Thanks again guys much appreciated.
