converting to aftermarket air intake

So i have bought a 86 gen 2. it did not come with any of the air intake equipment. so i figure i can get aftermarket k&n airfilter assembaly to replace the stock air dam. so one of my questions is what to do with the air flow meter or mass airflow sensor. how and where does it mount or how do i incorperate it into the air intake system?

You can get an adapter to fit a cone filter on ebay for like 6 bucks.(or buy a Big JDM Tight YO name brand POS and pay 60 bucks..lol!)
the Afm needs to be still attached,so try to install the filter and keep the AFM level so it can operate correctly.
I just used a small L bracket and attached it to one of the 4 bolts that the adapter attaches to the AFM and then bolted it to a spot on the frame,by the strut.

There is a K&N kit that you can get,it has a big oval filter and bracket..NICE price of $180 bucks too..(say WHAT????)

Just for clarification, an air dam is an aerodynamic device that blocks airflow, typically mounted under the front end of a car as show below in yellow. I think you intended to mean the air box, which is the plastic housing around the air filter.

More refined setup with a Vinspeed air box:

You can see pictures of parts and kits here:

K&N intake filters:

K&N filters for the air pump (if still installed):
K&N Crankcase Vent Filters

The 86-88 AFM requires an adapter because it has a square end, while the 89-92 AFM does not require an adapter because it has a round end. The cheapie Ebay adapters are not designed as well as the more expensive adapters, but on a stock 13B NA engine there would only be about 1hp difference.
