Component compatibility?
sorry, couldn’t think of a better title. Anyways, my sons and I are embarking on a project and building a 91 coupe. We have a zero mile since rebuild (but it’s been sitting) engine with paperwork saying it was half bridgeported. We plan on using a BNR turbo most likely, a FMIC, a stand alone EMS, better fuel pump and whatever else we come up with. The problem we are having is coming up with a general understanding of what works best with what. For instance, if we choose a BNR stage 4, we have no clue what injectors we would need. For EMS we are thinking Apexi power FC just because it’s mentioned a lot but have no clue if that’s the smartest route. I’ve been searching and reading for a week, and maybe I’m just too old, but I can’t seem to make sense of the basic needs. I’m wanting 400hp as a dream, but would probably be happy with anything over 300 with the more the better obviously. Reliability would be nice but this will not be a daily. Not my first rotary, but my first rotary in a long time and a last ditch effort to have one last major project with my boys before they move on in life. I guess my question is big, and kind of loaded, but I’m just looking for some general guidance or to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks in advance for any and all help. |
Welcome to the board. :)
Who will be tuning the car when it's all assembled? At the end of the day, that person would probably prove to be a better consultant. It will be an EMS that they are experienced with and supported parts that will work with it. You have the broad strokes, I guess you're just looking for the finer points. Here's a fuel injector calculator: https://witchhunter.com/injectorcalc1.php I remember when Injector Dynamics were all the rage, I don't know if that's still the case, but if your budget can cover them, then that's what I would recommend. That said, there are several other great choices out there. One other point I will put out there is this: I'm not necessarily the most knowledgeable, but you may want to reconsider your turbo choice with that bridgeport. Hopefully more knowing heads will contribute. |
No clue who will tune the car yet, and to be perfectly honest, I’m not even fully understanding the difference between street, half, and full bridgeporting. I’m not stuck on a BRM turbo and was just throwing things out that I’ve read and they looked budget minded. I haven’t set a “budget” for this car, but it is a weekend toy and I have annoying things like a mortgage and these grown ass boys that insist on eating every single day. |

Well, finding a tuner - and making sure it's someone that knows what they are doing - will be essential in your quest. As far as the porting is concerned, I used to have a sticky'd thread in here, but I guess it got taken down, so I will find it and link it for you. Essentially though, if you have an idea what a bridgeport actually is, then full is when you apply it to all 4 ports, and half is when you apply it to just 2 (usually the secondaries) while leaving the other 2 streetported. All sound like good plans. I’ll start researching tuners but if anyone can recommend one in the northeast Ohio area I’d appreciate it. Is it too soon to start a build thread? I’ve purchased two cars to build one and things are moving right along. |
I haven't been around as regularly as I used to, but when I think of Ohio, I think of Defined Auto (GtoRx7. on the board) ... his name is Logan. If he is still around, I think that would be a good place to start looking.
DEFINED AUTOWORKS | Service Repair Upgrades | Performance for Mazda RX7 | RX-7 | RX8 I have no idea how close that is to you, but he knows his stuff, and for as long as I've been here and known of him, I can't remember him being at the center of any drama. I will have to check if the rules have changed, but it used to be that you had to have at least 10 (I think) posts in the New Member forum before you can post in other forums. So starting a build thread would need to wait until then. |
I’m all for anti drama and will check them out. Thank you sir. |
No problem. :)
And yes, it is still minimum of 10 posts before you can start posting in other areas of the forum. https://www.rx7club.com/how-use-site...ements-923917/ |
Thanks for the info. |
