changing Fuel Injectors 87 Rx7
 

Hi guys,

I need to change the primary fuel injectors on my car (87 Rx7)

is there a write up on how to properly remove the manifold to get to the injectors? i dont want to break or mess something up lol

Hints:
- Do not just yank the electrical connectors off the injectors. First unclip the small metal retaining clip to unlock the fuel injector tabs, and then you can pull the connector off the injector. Hopefully nothing will crack if you are careful.
- There is a horizontal screw on the firewall side of the intake manifold that is very hard to see. If the upper manifold does not lift off easily, then you either forgot to take out this screw or similar screws on the driver's side of the manifold.
- Prior to disassembly, label the hoses and their respective nipple with masking tape and a pen. You may also want to do this with the other connections.
- Before installing the new injectors, coat the rubber o-rings with a light coat of Palmolive.
- Always use a torque wrench during reassembly. For some reason a lot of people tend to strip the vertical bolt that goes between the intake runners.
- The NA and TII fuel rails flow in opposite directions, so if you notice that a picture in a manual or on the internet doesn't match your setup, then it is probably because it is the other type of engine in the picture.
- Buy a new upper/lower intake manifold gasket beforehand. It's only about $6.
- Check your rubber fuel hoses while you are at it. Most likely they will have cracks. Replace them only with hoses rated for fuel injection pressure. Yes, they are expensive.
- Check your OMP lines while you are at it. There is a write-up in the 2Gen forum archive on fabricating new hoses.
- Consider sending the secondary injectors out for cleaning and "rebuild". If money is very tight or you can't afford to have your car down for a week or two, then obviously skip this. Otherwise, it's proably a good idea. http://witchhunter.com/injectorserv1.php4

I'm a new to the RX7 engines, as of 2 weeks ago, my first time removing the manifold was pretty straight forward.
1) Do take your time....it takes a while.
2) I reckon you follow the above instructions on the vacuum system, it is pretty complex, it puts Nissan to shame.
3) Plan on buying 2-3 ft of vacuum hose, 2-3 ft of fuel hose and 2-3ft of coolant hose for replacement.
4) this would be a perfect time to remove your OMP system and start running on premix or if you like to tinker around then do a 2-cycle conversion mod.

Removing OMP can be a pain in the ass, I'd leave that for a later date, after weighing the pro's/con's. Personally I run premix, but kinda wish I had a mechanical OMP with a premix reservoir for simplicity and reliabilities sake.

I'm sorry to revive this, but does anyone have a pic of this clip? I am trying to remove my injectors to send them off to Rich, and I can't seem to locate where the clip is :banghead:

It should be just like the clip that is found at the BAC plug (connectors are the same for the injectors and BAC), which if you look carefully is at the end of the plug, and the wire clip wraps around most, but not all of the plug connector.

use a dental pick or a very small flathead jeweler's screwdriver.
Remember that the plastic will be brittle so be careful when you attempt to get the clips off,otherwise you'll need to replace the connector as it won't properly reconnect onto the injector.

It looks like a bent paper clip, and it is located near the end of the plastic connector where it plugs/unplugs from the fuel injector.
