Buyers question!

Alright so I found a 1993 Rx7 TT 13b for 3500 CAD. Owner says it has a blown apex seal and needs a rebuild. Car has 60k KMs on it which seems fairly low but I am new to the rotary world and wouldn't really know if that is high or low.

Anyways I have a couple questions, can you tell if its just an apex seal gone bad without tearing it down? Anything major I should look for before buying?

Thanks SD, also I will add pictures of the car when I get home (On my phone right now) It looks slightly modded but I'm still a noob and the owner has no idea.. so it would be great if someone would give me some opinons

look up " Compression test"..either here or Compression testing a Rotary on Google..
and if it is an Apex seal it usually takes out a housing.Maybe the turbo too.
Welcome to the Forum Canuck!

Compression Test will still show the highest number though. Being the one side that has compression if only one seal is blown. Wouldn't that be miss leading?

At that price, I'd buy with a known blown engine if the rest of the car is decent.

Alright so here is the ad:

"Needs engine rebuild/ fixed. One apex seal let go but the car kept running. I only drove 3 km's and shut the engine off. I haven't started it again since so that it wouldn't cause more damage.

Overall the car is in great shape. The transmission is smooth, the twin fiberglass Recaro seats are in good shape. Turbo timer, many gauges and great sounding sound system.

Get this car running and on the road and you'll be sure to turn some heads."

Misleading.
..and One side of what?.the moon?
If a Seal is gone the The engine's compression is gonna show that.
Even if you do it "poor man style"....First rotor:"Woosh,..??..Crap.."..2nd rotor:"woosh woosh woosh"..
OP: for 3500 Canadian BUY IT..if not tell me where it is!!!

Yeah I was speaking of doing it with a cheap compression checker set. And by one side, I mean that if you lose one apex seal, you lose compression on two bath tubs (Two sides of the rotor). Leaving one with compression. And if you slapped a compression checker on it and started turning it over, and then went to check the gauge, It would read the compression that is had on the one side of the rotor, that still has compression.

I still new to this, but I think that is what would happen in such a situation.

it has to a spam add because it has a RIGHT HAND DRIVE CONVERSION.. a roller in that shape would go for atleast 5 grand

bass2theplace 08-07-12 09:21 PM

could always part it out at minimum. depends if seal broke apart and fuckd housing and rota etc

SpecialDelivery 08-08-12 10:09 AM

It's not a spam ad, I went over and looked it over. Very clean car but he owner doesnt know jack about it. But I am going over at the end of this week to haul it home!

ROTRHEAD718 08-08-12 06:30 PM

Awesome! Great find, right hand drive FTW!

SpecialDelivery 08-09-12 04:53 AM

Oh and one question, I can tow it right? Or should I just get a flatbed?

I did some reason and people said just to disconnect the Drive shaft and you'll be alright?

Arcane-Tweek 08-09-12 09:55 PM

Yeah drive shaft disconnect/ removal is safe. As long as you don't have ridiculous inclines to go over, like we have in parts of NC. I prefer flat beds when ever possible. Sometimes it's necessary.

misterstyx69 08-09-12 11:14 PM

For the time it takes you to get at the driveshaft and take the damn thing off, have fluid leak all over the freakin place and then put it back on,replace the fluid.....etc.
..Flatbed doesn't sound so bad does it?

If you are going to use a towing service, then the price between a regular tow truck and a flatbed don't vary too much, Sometimes it's the same price. Just depends on the provider. If you're towing it on your own, go rent one of the those flatbed car attatchment things (sorry dont know the technical term)

It looks like you found an awesome deal, and you will have a great project ahead of you.
Good luck with the engine.

ROTRHEAD718 08-13-12 12:28 PM

Towing it should be okay unless there are alot of potholes in your area. Personally, I would choose flatbed.

cleksutin 08-13-12 06:33 PM

question: why cant he put it in nuetral and use a car dolly?

ROTRHEAD718 08-13-12 07:05 PM

If you tow it on a dolly from the rear wheels it's fine, but if you tow it from the front wheels, it will cause transmission problems if you don't have proper lubrication. Although if it's a very short distance, it would fare ok.

Thank you rotrhead, no one has ever accurately explained that to me before, what would you consider a "very short distance"?

Leks

ROTRHEAD718 08-14-12 05:09 PM

Your welcome. :)

About 10 mile would be ok, but if the road is nasty, a flatbed would be best :)
