Buyers question!
Alright so I found a 1993 Rx7 TT 13b for 3500 CAD. Owner says it has a blown apex seal and needs a rebuild. Car has 60k KMs on it which seems fairly low but I am new to the rotary world and wouldn't really know if that is high or low.
Anyways I have a couple questions, can you tell if its just an apex seal gone bad without tearing it down? Anything major I should look for before buying? Thanks SD, also I will add pictures of the car when I get home (On my phone right now) It looks slightly modded but I'm still a noob and the owner has no idea.. so it would be great if someone would give me some opinons |
look up " Compression test"..either here or Compression testing a Rotary on Google..
and if it is an Apex seal it usually takes out a housing.Maybe the turbo too. Welcome to the Forum Canuck! |
Compression Test will still show the highest number though. Being the one side that has compression if only one seal is blown. Wouldn't that be miss leading?

At that price, I'd buy with a known blown engine if the rest of the car is decent.

Yeah I was speaking of doing it with a cheap compression checker set. And by one side, I mean that if you lose one apex seal, you lose compression on two bath tubs (Two sides of the rotor). Leaving one with compression. And if you slapped a compression checker on it and started turning it over, and then went to check the gauge, It would read the compression that is had on the one side of the rotor, that still has compression.
I still new to this, but I think that is what would happen in such a situation. |
it has to a spam add because it has a RIGHT HAND DRIVE CONVERSION.. a roller in that shape would go for atleast 5 grand

could always part it out at minimum. depends if seal broke apart and fuckd housing and rota etc

It's not a spam ad, I went over and looked it over. Very clean car but he owner doesnt know jack about it. But I am going over at the end of this week to haul it home!

Yeah drive shaft disconnect/ removal is safe. As long as you don't have ridiculous inclines to go over, like we have in parts of NC. I prefer flat beds when ever possible. Sometimes it's necessary.

For the time it takes you to get at the driveshaft and take the damn thing off,have fluid leak all over the freakin place and then put it back on,replace the fluid.....etc.
..Flatbed doesn't sound so bad does it? |

Towing it should be okay unless there are alot of potholes in your area. Personally, I would choose flatbed.

question: why cant he put it in nuetral and use a car dolly?

If you tow it on a dolly from the rear wheels it's fine, but if you tow it from the front wheels, it will cause transmission problems if you don't have proper lubrication. Although if it's a very short distance, it would fare ok.

About 10 mile would be ok, but if the road is nasty, a flatbed would be best :) |
