Best ECU for tuning

Hello Gents,

I'm finally ready to take the plunge next year and buy my FD. I haven't had a rotary for at least 15yrs when I sold my FC.

Some quick questions if you don't mind.

1. It seems on a stock engine, 12psi is about the 'safe' limit for the fuel system. What kind of a tune is required to get there? I guess my question is... what's everyone's preferred ECU (piggyback, standalone, or modify OEM ECU)?

2. It also seems 15psi is about the max on the stock engine assuming the fuel mods can be addressed. How long does a stock engine typically last under these conditions?

Thanks so much guys. Still learning here :)

The most preferred ECU is one that either you can tune or someone else close to you can.
It doesn't matter what anyone else has.If you can't tune it,it is no use to you.
A lot of FD guys are running Apexi PFC.But really it comes down to your choice, your financial status and the availability of getting the ECU tuned correctly for what you have in the engine bay.

See my posts in these two threads in reference to a full standalone EMS:

Thanks for the responses guys. Evil Aviator, i've got a lot to catch up on in that thread!

I'm familiar with tuning and especially familiar with the HKS F-Con Powerwriter software. I also agree that go with what your tuner likes the best. With that said, I was just curios what "most" people go with for the FD. I'm comfortable with the HKS F-Con iS and VPro but again, still trying to learn what is the preferred ECU (or piggyback) for experienced owners.

Will read up more on Haltech and Apexi PFC. I'm unfamiliar with those brands.

I've used everything from Split Second (yikes!), AEM F/IC, AEM EMS, and HKS F-Con.

If anyone can help me with links or comments it would be appreciated! thanks

Easier way PFC+Datalogit...it's good and the commander it's usefull to monitor things when you drive (best fix for the lack of OBD)

Best? MOTEC (but you have to sell a Kidney) and is way more difficult to tune

Megasquirt (if nothing changed from older version) it's all but NOT plug and play......

You need to do LOT of thing and wirig just to istall the ECU, and after you can start to tune....

If I want one of the top solution I go with MOTEC but if the target is a streetable or a circuit/touge car PFC+datalogit is a way simpler solution....

If you want 600+CV and other stuff then the amount of work needed with Megasquirt is accettable...

Btw a PFC tuned FD3S with around 450 CV can complete the nurburgring nordschleife lap in less then 7.50 then I can Say that PFC is all but not good.....

We can say that if you want to do Drag probably there are better choice then PFC, but if you only want a fast car on the road and street....it's enough...probably more then 90% of driver can really use...
