Battery keeps dying

Hi this is my first post because i'm a little bit in a rush.

I own a '86 RX7 and well about 2 days ago, all the sensor lights turned on randomly and they wont turn off since. Anyways, the next day I took out all the fuses and put them back in. This didn't fix anything by the way.

Making a mistake, I put a 60v fuse into a 30v and vice versa. I didn't notice this until my car started dying on me yesterday. The next day, I put the fuses in the right places, tried jump starting my car, and now it won't even hold a charge.

For example: I jump started my car, It was a little under 12v. I turned it on and took off the jumper cables. I put it in reverse and started to drive away, the volts took a dive down to 8 and I kept driving and in about 5 minutes it died on me.

I was thinking there could be a messed up ground wire or circuit somewhere.
Any suggestions ?

All of the warning lights coming on is the signal that there is a problem with the charging system.

Fully charge the battery (no, a jump start won't charge the battery), start the engine, and test the alternator output. Put a multimeter on the alternator B-post and the negative battery terminal. Alternatively, you can just put the leads on the battery terminals. Ideally, you should see 14v+ at idle. If it's significantly lower, the battery will drain while the engine is running.

If you're unable to do this test, you can take the alternator (or whole car) to an auto parts store and ask them to test it.

Your alternator is fried,,replace it.
If the alternator went it is a good idea to get the battery replaced too(or checked out with an AVR test),as the car would have no juice from the alternator and rely on the battery.Since the battery is being constantly drained it cant keep up and gives up the ghost too.
The car won't run after the battery is drained off so the ecu gives up(because if low voltage),and voila, car dies.

^ it doesn't necessarily mean that the alternator is fried though, i had this same thing happen to my car and it was because the alternator belt wasn't tight enough. Check the belt first, and make sure its tight enough to give full charge to the battery. a good rule of thumb is if you can turn it around with your fingers, its too loose.

Thanks for everything. I haven't been able to get much done because of 4th of july.
I'm kind of a scrub when it comes to cars, especially rx7s but i have a question.

Cateater had me thinking with the belt so i checked and uhmm.... is there supposed to be a belt right there?

RotaryRocket88 07-05-11 02:50 PM

So...you lost your alternator belt? $10 will fix that.

Defqonik 07-05-11 02:51 PM

Yah i think so. Can you see the picture by the way? lol because it's not coming up on my computer.

RotaryRocket88 07-05-11 07:40 PM

I couldn't see it, so I edited your post to find the URL. You can't use IMG tags on an image that displays like that. You're linking to a webpage, not just the image.

Pick up a new belt, and check the lines on the metering oil pump (bottom of front cover). If the belt snapped, it could damage other things in the engine bay, and the MOP lines are the most fragile.

Well I was close!
the alternator just won't work without a belt, right?

Cateater 07-06-11 09:04 AM

i had a feeling that might be the problem......same type of thing happened with me. well cool! you dont have to buy a new alternator just a 10 dollar belt

Defqonik 07-07-11 07:54 PM

Alright thanks for the post edit and how to actually post a picture haha

And yah I just got a new belt, put it on, and everything worked out. No damage to anything else.

I still have no idea what happened to the other belt though ...
I'm just glad I spent 10 bucks instead 300 lol :D

seriously, between socks in the dryer and parts on a 13b, you'd swear there's a conspiracy:scratch:

dead battery

My battery went dead this spring. I charged it and drove it some more and seems fine. I dont drive it in the winter, but usually start it every month.

As long as you don't start wearing sequins, keep pet monkeys and start hanging babies out windows.

Lol so I got my alternator belt off moved around drivebelts to replace it. Thought I would have to remove the fan shroud but nope. I hopefully got the alternator torqued right
