Apex Seals

I've been on the internet and there is a lot of different info regarding apex seals...I have an '88 10th Anniversary Turbo and have blown out the apex seals in the rear rotor. I've pulled the motor and am getting ready to tear it down...Idon't know if there is further damage. The motor is stock...only a Racing Beat free flow exhaust straight off the turbo...no cats or air pump...approximately 10 to 11psi...looking for recommendations on what seals to get 2mm?3mm?from whom etc. On a budget and want reliabilty...is this too much to ask for?

OEM 2mm seals. 3mm seals would require machining metal out of the rotors to fit. Mazda or Atkins would be good sources. If the apex seals broke and were shot out the exhaust, the housing (and maybe the middle/rear irons) will be junk. Fortunately, most of the time the surface of the seals just gets damaged, which causes the loss of compression.

And if your engine is stock besides the open exhaust, there's the reason your engine blew. 10-11 psi on stock fuel will detonate due to running too lean. If/when you get the car running, keep the boost at no more than 8psi unless you upgrade the fuel system.

Rotary Aviation has really nice Hardened Super seals...complet engine rebuild is only about 600 ..not incl gaskets..but everything for internal that you should need
and it can withstand more boost too if you can tune the timing map and fuel map...
i guess it can take a bit more too on a stock ecu..

Thanks for the info guys! WHEN I get the car running assuming I stay w/ RB exhaust, how do I control the boost to 8psi and or what mods to fuel system are needed? Thanks for the support.

You'll need to port the wastegate to control boost with an open exhaust system.

This will still be needed even if you upgrade fuel/fuel control, since huge boost spikes can still blow the engine. Typical cheap mods would be 720cc secondaries, an FD/walbro/other fuel pump & Rtek 1.7 rechipped ECU or SAFC + FCD.

Boost control

Thanks for the additional info...I need to start the tear down and determine what I am up against...I may be jumping the gun...I'm going to be looking for some hands on help in the central VA area, if you have any direction or contact info let me know. Thanks again!
