purchasing out-of-state Gen 1 passing CA Smog??
Hey everyone! New here and I don't have a RX-7 yet but i'm interested in finding a stock 1985 GSL-SE I don't mind shopping out of state for the car but I live in San Diego California and California emissions regulations are nutty. Has anyone purchased an out of state Gen 1 RX-7 and had it successfully pass smog and registered in California? |
I just bought a gsl, and live in LA. haven't registered the car yet, will try smogging it once im done with upgrades and some minor fixes. I'm pretty sure it will fail miserably, as my car is 100% original. i will not smog it until next month as im going on a trip shortly, but i will report on what happens.

There is a valve that diverts the air pump back into the intake at a certain rpm, but it tends to fail and then the air pump is always routed back to the intake so your cats don’t get any air at lower rpm. This causes a lot of cars to fail that have perfectly good cats. Easy fix is just bypass valve, run hose from air pump straight to the metal pipe that goes down to the car. Just don’t rev too high when running like this, drive to test station, pass your test, and then hook the air pump back up to the broken valve. |
Thanks for the response. Looking forward to hearing your experience. I worry that that if I buy a car in a state that doesn’t have high emissions standards then the car wouldn’t be equipped with the necessary emissions components. Not or sure if that’s the case or not. I’m wanting a stock running car and don’t plan on modifying other than fixing whatever’s broken and making it more reliable, paint and what not. My hope is that a running RX-7 in decent condition would pass CA smog regardless of what state it came from. |
no worries but like i said it will take some time as ill be away until the 10th of next month. so you should probably look around forums. my car is bone stock and i plan to keep it that way.
since i move to LA i haven't seen many SA22 ruining about, not sure if it is rarity of the car or emissions. like you said if its a well maintained and the car is tuned to spec, it shouldn't have a problem passing. Maybe try to search for what kind of emissions components came standard on the car from state to state? but i have a feeling it will be all the same. |
ok i managed to smog my car. sorry it took so long. I expected to fail the first time i took it in as i knew it has a bad shutter valve, and indeed i did, replaced the part and it passed with all original emission parts except for a new shutter valve. with that said its a huge rock off my chest and i can finally be legal in cali, curse this state for smog.
