Annoying sound when driving
 

hi there
i just bought an 1987 rx7
and am trying to updated it and make it run nice and smooth but when i drive it ,it makes a cluking sound. :dunno:
my mechanic said that it could be the hubs or the tires, what i wanna know is if u guys know a website or a place where they sell the two rear hubs for my car. cause i cant find one damn place where they sell the full hub assembly.:scratch:

Is this a constant clunking sound? Or does it only happen over bumps?

Im pretty sure my car does the same thing.. whenever i'm driving.. just constant (da da da da da)

Also, your local junkyard is your best friend for FCs.

Also consider wheel inbalance or a loose suspension component. To test your bearings, raise the car and try to move the wheel. If there is play, then it is probably the bearings. If you do need to order bearings, Mazdatrix has them http://www.mazdatrix.com/h86-92bearings.htm They currently have only the front bearings available in the full hub assembly. All bearings are available by themselves.

i had the same problem. if its coming from the rear, check your ring and pinion gears for a broken tooth.

clunking sounds are generally bushings not hubs. I suggest you try and find a rotary specialist in your area and have them take a look at it. The Regional sub-forums should have a sticky with local rotary specialists in your area.

same here... it just goes da da da da when im driving it like at 40 mph.. i hear the noise better when i put it in neutral or when i let go the gas:scratch:

it mostly happens when am driving around 30 - 60 mph... and its a da da da da type of sound coming from the back.. and i had my uncle drive behind me and he said the passenger side back wheel dances when driving.. like as if it was bent or something.. and

and ima see this weekend.. ima go take it to my mechanic to put in the new slotted and drill brake disc with pad (really low brakes)...and ima ask him to balance it and then go to my uncles mechanic so tht he could check it out.. thank for the advice u guys.

a sound with that description makes me think of a wheel bearing. however a tire that is worn badly from too much toe from a bad alignment will make a sound similar to a bad wheel bearing.

Your best bet is to get it to a trust worthy mechanic that can properly diagnose this w/o spending tons of cash throwing parts at the car hoping it will fix it.

A wheel bearing issue usually manifests itself only during a slight turn in either direction.

To me, with wheel hopping, sounds more like a bad diff mount, bad diff, or a bent axle. It could be the tire balance as well.

Check the differential mount.

its the diff mount, replace the diff mount, and install a pinion snubber

Mine does this I have a bent axle.The brake pads hitting the high spot on the rotor make this noise.I put new pads and rotors on before I figured out the problem.Take the wheel off and take take the pads out of the caliper shoe then spin the rotor if it goes from one side of the shoe to the other its a bent axle,or a very warped rotor.Then take the rotor off and put a dial indicator on the axle hub and check for run out as per fsm.
