94 RX-7 No Start
 
I'm new to the RX7 market. I went to start my RX-7 one night and it half started and shut off. I couldn't get it restarted again.

It's an automatic, bone stock.

I replaced the fuel relay (near the battery). I jumped the diagnostic port and I can hear the pump activate.

When I pull the jumper out of the diag. port and turn the key to ignition 2, I do not hear the fuel pump prime.

Any suggestions?

Also, when the jumper was in place and I did hear the fuel pump running, i tried to start the car, but it wouldn't start.

Is this problem also related?

I never really paid attention...but I don't THINK you will hear the pump prime a second time if you turn the key off and then on again within a short period. So if you tested it like that, NOT hearing it may not mean anything. Have you pulled the spark plugs to confirm lack of fuel...or maybe flooding?

Check ignition....good spark? Some other things that come to mind is to just visually check the CAS (Crank Angle Sensors) to make sure wires are in-tact, the trigger wheel isn't bent and the sensors and connectors are secure.

The Factory Service Manual (FSM) probably mentions other things to trouble-shoot and is available to download free in the 3rd Gen. Stickys.

is it trying to start and just wont turn over? or is it just plain dead and all you are getting is a click? I had a problem with the car only starting every so often and when it didn't start I always heard the fuel pump but all I was getting was a click, although I had full battery power and all lights/accessories. Turned out to be the starter was shot. Easy replace in 20 minutes and problem solved for me. I have a 93 FD btw

I had the same thing happen to me and it was the alarm system draining battery so I replaced it and all good but a starter may be in order here before sumer is out

I thought that too. I had a friend jump in the car and I was in the back. I let it sit for a day before trying it again, but nothing. I jump the diagnostic connector and you hear the pump.

I haven't pulled the plugs yet or checked spark. I'll do that this weekend. I've been busy with work and school.

I was looking over the manual, and it looks like you need special mazda tools. Is there an easier way to check the electronics using a volt/ohm meter?

I hate the fact that I have to get underneath the car to check spark. lol. I'm used to Acuras. Oh well, it's a learning curve for me.

The engine turns. It seems quicker than normal, or maybe its just me thinking that. The car used to start quick, which is why I feel that the engine turns over fast, but doesn't fire up.

Does the factory alarm have a fuel cutoff or can it disable ignition?

take the fuel pump fuse out and crank it for 5 sec and then do it once more, then put the fuse back in and crank it. check compression also, take a spark plug out and crank it over and listen for puffs. do that on all 4

You don't absolutely need to get under the car to check spark or remove plugs. Just remove the intake elbow and reach down. In fact...that's how the FSM says to do it. But IMO it's easier and simpler to deal with the plugs and wires from underneath.

I have had the same problem with my rx8 amd my rx7 ,,,, if you can manage to pull your plugs put a little bit of transmission oil in the tip of the plug and this will boost the car to start up . Only do this if you do have spark and its not starting .

i'll make sure it has spark before putting transmission oil on the tip.

try not to put anything on the tips of the plugs.. theres vacum nipples on the lower intake manifold, take one off and squirt oil in there. that should help get compression.

spark? take a plug out with the wire still on it and take a rubber coated screwdriver and hold it close to the plug and crank the engine, if the plug arcs to the screwdriver then you have spark..
