I think one of my turbos has gone out. out of no where the car started to idle real low and wanted to die and started to burn alot of gas. i checked for compression the motor has plenty of compression my manual said stock is 150 psi and thats what it is at with 93,000 on the stock engine......but the turbos are not doing anything you can hear one of them spool up but im not too sure wats going on if anyone has any ideas please let me know!!!

also how do you make atleast 350 to the rear wheels with stock turbos. i was told you can cut the shaft that makes them work together to make it to where they dont and get more power but i have not found anything showing how to do it or if its done alot

Remove the turbo assembly and inspect it to determine the exact failure.

But before you do that, you may want to check the ridiculous mess of vacuum lines in the area to make sure nothing has failed (something probably has).

Your issue could also be a bad fuel injector. They can lock open, which will give you the effect of smoke and the appearance of a blown engine as it will generally run on only one rotor.

Mahjik 12-08-10 10:54 AM

How did you do your compression test? You need to check the individual faces of each rotor, so you should have 3 values per rotor. They should all be similar (i.e. if you have one face at 100 PSI and the other two at 30 PSI, the motor is done).

If you have a problem with the stock turbo system, check the following site:

http://www.autosportracetech.com/RX-...leshooting.htm

As for making around 350rwhp with the stock turbos, you need to increase the boost. With that:

* ECU (re-chipped or programmable)
* Intercooler (larger SMIC or FMIC). Intercooler change will most likely require a different intake.
* Exhaust (downpipe, midpipe or hi-flow cat, better flowing catback)

Not needed, but recommended:

* HKS ignition amp
* Greddy or other boost controller

If you haven't already picked up a boost gauge, I would suggest installing one for the future... A relatively inexpensive means of monitoring your engine boost with acceptable accuracy at all times.

Sideo 12-08-10 12:03 PM

check the vacuum line to the map sensor, if that blows off it will mimic the symptoms of a blown engine. Heres a picture of the map sensor location if your unsure.

i did a compression test from the spark plugs holes. i only did the one rotor housing so far cause its a little bit of a hassle to get to the front rotor housing. i was told if i unplugged the turbo precontrol i would get alot better turbo response and i did but it all went down hill about a month after and im hoping it just the turbos or vacuum lines. is there any way i can get rid of that damn mess of lines?

you can hear one turbo building boost but it doesnt do anything from there

Sgtblue 12-08-10 03:54 PM

The amount of vacuum lines can be reduced signficantly with emissions removal, but you need to know what your doing and move to a standalone ECU.
STOP listening to whoever is telling you cut the turbo shafts and disconnect the pre-control. To start, I'd reconnect EVERYTHING that you've disconnected or changed since owning the car and see if that helps. I also agree with checking the boost sensor as Sedio suggested.
If you still have problems, use that link that Mahjik gave you or look for a Rotary specialty shop near you.
And 150 psi on the rear rotor sounds WAY too high.

steve9313b 12-08-10 06:56 PM

Well i was told i wasnt doing the compression test right? I was using a regular compression tester that you get from the parts store and if im not mistaken it said 150 on the gauge but im gunna have to retry it so if anyone can give me pointers please let me know. Also my shop manual said the compression should be 150

steve9313b 12-08-10 10:04 PM

Thanks for that site im going to try that tomorrow! How much is it to get you computer chipped and wheres the best place to do it. Ive already got new intake and 3 inch exhaust straight back no cats and a muffler

Sgtblue 12-09-10 04:40 AM

You can get your ECU re-programmed at PETTIT and a few others. http://www.pettitracing.com/rx7/index_management.htm

If you're exhaust has been opened that much (no cats) by the previous owner, I hope the wastegate has been ported. Look up Boost CREEP in the FAQs.

Mahjik 12-09-10 08:42 AM

Given the prices of aftermarket ECU's like the PowerFC today, the re-chipped ECU's are not as good of a deal as they used to be.... I don't recommend them today unless you pick them up used. You can typically find used Pettit ECU's for around $300 which is a good deal.

Thanks for the help guys! It was just the vacuum line going to the map sensor came off! But still having problems with the secondary turbo it doesnt kick in at 4500 rpm like its suppose to

Sgtblue 12-09-10 11:39 AM

Using a small zip-tie at both ends of that boost sensor vacuum line helps.

Take a look the troubleshooting guide I posted several messages above.

Sideo 12-09-10 07:46 PM

are you making 10 psi on the first turbo? if your making under 7psi you have a boost leak. the secondary turbo wont come on unless the first turbo makes over 5psi.

if it is boosting 7psi previous owner probably had a boost controler and removed it and didnt reinstall pils.

steve9313b 12-09-10 10:22 PM

No boost controller has been hooked up to it. Ive got one for the car just dont know how to install it :/ im new to the turbo scene.... Lol

Sideo 12-10-10 02:29 PM

so how much boost are you making?

steve9313b 12-10-10 03:09 PM

Im not sure i have a boost controller for it but irs not hooked up i dont know where any of it goes

steve9313b 12-10-10 03:10 PM

Im new to all the turbo stuff im usually a american muscle guy.

Sideo 12-10-10 08:50 PM

dont hook up the boost controler until after we get this sorted out ill help you then. but you shoukd definately get a boost gauge so u can see how much boost you are making. pick up a cheap one and instal it ( there is probably a nipple on the back of the intake manifold that is capped, take off the capand attach boost gauge line there) and report back on how much boost you are making.

steve9313b 12-10-10 09:07 PM

Is there any certain gauge to get since ita twin turbo to check boost on both?

Sideo 12-11-10 07:41 PM

nope both turbos presurize the same intake tract so nothing special.

steve9313b 12-11-10 10:21 PM

Alright. Ive got to find a descent gauge pod and a boost gauge on ebay. And then i will report back and let you guys know. Thanks for all the help i almost sold the car for 4800! Lol

Sideo 12-12-10 01:30 PM

4800! dont do that lololol
we'll get it sorted out
